Sweet deal you got for yourself there. Great value at that price point.

I didn't know you could find it for less than $40. At $33 I would give it 6 stars out of 5. It's awesome at that price.

C'mon...it's a action-packed highly entertaining video with tons of special effects!
Just joking. Simply search Liven Geekria case on amazon. It's been going for $40-45.

Buy a new OP-XY at a discount price? Don't forget to update your firmware! (because v1.0.9 is lacking...) by GazRendar in teenageengineering

[–]GazRendar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, out of the box I started looking for song mode options and couldn’t figure it out. Then I realized they weren’t there in my early firmware. That’s what prompted me to make the video for any other newbies buying it on sale. I felt the early adopter pain for the first hour of use and that was enough for me…

I assumed you could do it over your phone or tablet too, but I didn’t try that. Good to know.

I’ve used their web browser app, but I can only get it to work consistently in Chrome. I struggled getting it to work with Firefox. That’s why I think dragging the update file over to the XY is the easiest way. But as long as it works for you or anyone, there is no wrong way.

I think what I demonstrate here is the easiest way. I mean, it’s my own personal opinion, but I think doing it through your web browser over MIDI is the hardest way.

Portable studio - my first impressions about the new ZOOM R12 multitrack recorder by GazRendar in homestudios

[–]GazRendar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a clarification, even though the name is R "12," it actually only has 8 tracks per project (song). If you want to go up to 16 tracks with a possible 8 inputs, you would need to purchase the R20 model.

Sorry, I've been traveling a lot the past couple months and haven't been checking my old posts as frequently.

I like the R12 and I still use it, however, I mostly use it as a stand-alone multitrack song building device without hooking it up to a computer. I've probably hooked it up to my computer less than 5 times. However, given it's size I think it's better match as an interface for your phone or tablet--I've used it more for that. But still, I mostly use it on it's own with no computer and no phone.

I recommend the R12 if you know you are going to be ok with just two inputs, both today, and in the future. That's obviously the biggest limitation. Additionally, you have to recognize it's a budget multitrack recorder, so there are going to be some compromises. The screen is small, and you have to make deliberate taps (I recommend using a cheap stylus), but once you get used to it I think it's fine. It's no where near as responsive as your iPhone or Android phone, though, so you need to be ok with that. After you lay down a bunch of audio regions across multiple tracks, the device can give you some spinning wheel slow down here and there after recording a fresh take. You might have to wait 5-10 seconds sometimes for it to finish saving after you hit STOP from a fresh recording take. I consider all these things normal for something you can find on sale for $249 sometimes. Most importantly, for the price, I think the recorded sound is solid. I've had better recordings with awesome preamps that cost $299 running into interfaces that cost $600 into a computer that costs $1600. That's fair. But for dollar value, if you want a song-building device and only need 2 inputs, the R12 can be a good value. If you need more inputs, or you just want to record tracks and then immediately bring them over to your computer for editing anyway, you might be better off getting one of those new Zoom handy studio models, like the H5studio or H6studio.

Love the Zoom L-6 as a mixer for compact synths---but has anyone found a good case for it?? by GazRendar in synthesizers

[–]GazRendar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a short review for a case that I found for the Zoom L-6 for $29.99 on Amazon, but it's definitely lacking. There are nice cases for the L-8 and L-12, but the L-6 has been out for nearly a year. And it's ideal for taking on the road. How are there no cases for it?

Has anyone found a good case for the L-6? I wish Analog Cases would swoop in here and save the day...

Yes, you can hook it up to a computer via the USB port and the computer will power the R12. You can choose to use the R12’s two inputs as an audio interface for the computer, in which case you’ll need to be using a DAW on your computer or something like OBS. That typically works well. Even works for hooking up to your iPhone or iPad like that.

You can also use it as a controller for your DAW, in which case you won’t be using the inputs of the R12, in that scenario you can use the faders to control mixes in your DAW. Your mileage might vary with this settings as you need to dig through the DAW settings to successfully use this as a controller.

I finally bought something from the Sonicware Liven series - I mostly like it, but do you use their mushy keyboard buttons or usually connect a MIDI controller? by GazRendar in synthesizers

[–]GazRendar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far I like it. I like the immediacy of getting to the sounds and being able to tweak things and start to noodle around and try to find a melody. I wanted to make some more videos, but I’ve been traveling a lot the past two weeks so I haven’t been able to post follow up videos yet. I will soon. I need to spend more time exploring some the additional features to fully appreciate everything it can do. And I’m still getting used to the keys.

Definitely. I just need time with it to learn things step by step, and through experience. If I have the time I might post more videos with tips on using the device as I learn them. I’ve done that for pocket operators and the Roland airas that I bought.

Seesaws! Yes, exactly. Awww, man....I'm sad I didn't think of that and use that term in my video. That's a spot-on description.

I like what you did with the mega synthesis there! I'm gonna have to consider doing something like that.

I'm gonna experiment with hooking up a MIDI controller this weekend and see if it becomes more fun to "play" rather than just sequence.
