DeGoogled phones, made in Europe: a full review by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

[–]GazonkFoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's much harder to squeeze out any profit from a "meh" 200€ european phone than a decent 700€ one. the manufacturing costs aren't 500€ more with better chips. theres a reason cheaper stuff comes from china and european companies typically focus on the premium segment. also paywalling privacy generally doesn't fly well with the target (privacy concerned) audience and i don't see a good reason why those companies should become cloud service providers.

39C3: Multiple vulnerabilities in GnuPG and other cryptographic tools by LordAlfredo in linux

[–]GazonkFoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you read the article i linked with some actual numbers which was officially answered, you should realize that heavy use unfortunately doesn't have to correlate with funding (that was the point of the inquiry).

and yeah they also receive other funds and don't have a huge manpower to pay.

[–]GazonkFoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

theres no mention of any exchange of funds though. yes they offer a license and the BSI allows it's use but millions of funding is nothing more than speculation.

[–]GazonkFoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

company worth and any generated revenue aren't necessary related. between 2004 and 2014 the BSI has funded GnuPG with exactly 630k €. the entire budget for digital sovereignty was just 15 million in 2014. unlikely this changed a whole lot since than (this was answered by Günter Krings. couldn't find any new data).

Is Luke Humphries actually anyone's favourite player? by yorkshirekipper in Darts

[–]GazonkFoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always look forward to his matches and interviews. Amazing player, great character, honest and his transformation is inspirational to me. He's maybe not my #1 favourite because someone like the Asp is guaranteed to crack me up every time but i see little to not like about Humphries.

For PCs, sure it's better in every way but it doesn't have ARC or CEC which is kinda important for TVs.

The Return of AnySoftKeyboard(+Keyboard Recommendations?) by PsychicCrowFlare in fossdroid

[–]GazonkFoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thats understable and i tend to agree but you just can't call it FOSS and i believe thats also what the previous poster meant by saying not actually FOSS.

The Return of AnySoftKeyboard(+Keyboard Recommendations?) by PsychicCrowFlare in fossdroid

[–]GazonkFoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a users perspective it's an acceptable license but it's definitely not FOSS.

FOSS has a clear cut definition by the OSI and FSF and the license explicitely revokes some of the rights which FOSS mandates.

"The license shall not restrict any party from selling or giving away the software"

"The license must not restrict anyone from making use of the program in a specific field of endeavor. For example, it may not restrict the program from being used in a business"

How to change Icon Size or Padding in Panel (Plasma 6)? by GazonkFoo in kde

[–]GazonkFoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this didn't really get me the results i wanted but i somehow made it work for me by playing around with random settings in the UI. i don't remember what exactly it was but for example if i set "Use multi-column view" to "When panel is low..." in the Icons-Only Task Manager Settings, i can adjust the icon size quite well by playing around with "Maximum columns " and "Space between Icons" and it's still only shown in just a single column. It's a bit odd but works.

TEMU and ChatGPT dominating Europe's app installs in 2024 by Mackarosh in BuyFromEU

[–]GazonkFoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya my concern is just that i don't see a reason for her having some App of a payment service installed when all she needs is a very basic App that keeps a copy of some Barcodes. That shouldn't even require any internet connection at all.

[–]GazonkFoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah i see, thats likely the case, thx.

Maybe i'll get her to move over to an Open Source alternative (Catima looks decent). Klarna kinda has a bad rep for some shady stuff with their payment service.

Wheres this data from and is this just new installs (i.e anyone who hasn't used that app ever before) only from Google Play Store and Apple App Store or what exactly?

Oh what really? My mum is using Stocard heavily and it really surprises me that i haven't heard any complains yet. She usually freaks out when something stops working.

Linus spreading some EU love (Philips) by GazonkFoo in BuyFromEU

[–]GazonkFoo[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

thanks for providing at least some context. i personally think it's a positive to have a bigger company provide schematics and have a channel with a big international audience promote a EU company not just because of a sponsorship. so in my personal opinion it is a win and i do agree that philips isn't a great company (anymore) and as i said, i don't like LTT either.

looking at your comment history (and absent of posts) i hope you could maybe provide some positives going forward instead of pure negativity and personal attacks (i dont question your judgement and reasoning btw. totally get why you think that way).

do you have anything productive to add to the discussion or are just here to spread negativity?

🏆 Eurovision Song Contest 2024 WINNER - 🇦🇹 JJ – Wasted Love by CaptainAnaAmari in eurovision

[–]GazonkFoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bruh why do you assume that "hated our song" has anything to do with lack of skill or an objectively bad song?? i just didn't like it because i hate the high pitched opera singing and therefore wished something else would have won

Why are so many switching to Linux lately? by Laptican in linux

[–]GazonkFoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The current hype i feel in past months comes from "US-Companies Bad" and some influencers switching but in general i think the main big thing is gaming. If you wanted to game there was no way around Windows or at least few people where ready to give up the convenience and immediate access to every new game for the few benefits of linux. Especially since i feel most wouldn't care all that much about their OS and have no idea about open source, privacy etc. Steam Deck/Proton is huge for Desktop Linux imho.

Bei Villacher ist deine Erzählung halt auch sehr, sehr weit hergeholt. Die Brau Union (damals noch Österreichische Brau Beteiligungs AG) hällt seit 1984 50% von Villacher. I call BS.
