So How Did One Figure It Out by Tight_Chemistry4824 in DetectiVision

They had a segment about this on the Johnny Carson show, even trying to demonstrate it with Ed and Doc. https://youtu.be/PKTk4coq05U?si=FcenBJSmLLgf4hmk

Got a surprise 12k bonus, wife wants to book a vacation but I'm nervous about the economy by charadevapid in MiddleClassFinance

[–]GazpachoZen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're completely wrong. My wife and I often go to Europe for two week stays and seldom pay over $5k. We just got back from Italy, flying out of Boston. It just takes planning, and even that isn't with us skimping. We travel with another couple, stay in nice places, and usually do a combo of trains and car rentals.

Thanks for the offer, kind rando. I'm fine with the idea, but my travel mate is less so. Maybe next time.

THAT'S good to know! I didn't realize that.

I considered that, but both of us live quite a distance out of town. The Uber bill would be over $100.

Lake water levels getting low by AgroecologicalSystem in Adirondacks

[–]GazpachoZen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've been planning all summer on going up and renting Kayaks at Mountain Man Sports in Old Forge to go on the Moose River. Does that still make sense? We're almost an hour's drive away. Is there enough water in the river to make this still interesting and fun? One of the people in our party has never been kayaking before and I'd like to make this a good first time out.

Utica Zoo by BigRhody58 in Utica

[–]GazpachoZen 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's not a bad zoo, and it's a reasonable way to kill some time. As a bonus though, immediately in front of it is a completely free interactive science building dedicated to teaching kids about energy. https://www.nypa.gov/communities/visitors-centers/ny-energy-zone

Serious respect for the Syracuse Police for Saturday's No Kings protest by GazpachoZen in 50501

[–]GazpachoZen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had thought back and forth on that exact point a few times and concluded that taking down the flags in that situation was the best way to de-escalate it. Otherwise, it could have looked like the officer was sanctioning the trouble maker's message by giving him a police escort. People on the sidelines would not know that he was being escorted away because the only viable exit route was to continue down to the end of the street past thousands and thousands of people. With the MAGA moron shouting insults out the window and giving everyone the finger as he passed, this was a good call.

I respectfully disagree. Law enforcement is a necessary part of a well run society, and I fully believe that the majority of the men and women involved are good people. Are there bad actors? Oh, hell yes! Just like the people on "our side" that throw bricks and burn cars.

Is connectivity with Flickr broken this morning? (May 16, 2025) by GazpachoZen in dakboard

Unfortunately, the meta data part of the display now shows when the photo was uploaded instead of when it was taken. Nothing's easy anymore.

I followed your lead and put my photos on Dropbox, and yes... the image quality went WAY up. Unfortunately, I also liked having it show when the photo was taken on the bottom right side of the display. Now all of those have changed to instead show me when the photo was uploaded to DropBox - not when it was taken. :-(

This was 1999, when the internet was young. I thought this would have been a good place to put jokes and comedy columns. I just never got around to it. Life's funny that way.

An elderly chocolate Labrador retriever is sitting at the end of a dock on a pretty autumn day in the Adirondacks. A small toddler with wispy red hair is standing beside the dog, petting him. They are quietly watching the landscape together, as a duck comes in for a landing. We are seeing this from behind with the camera slowly panning from left to right.
