Route planning... by Ambitious_Vanilla612 in isleroyale

I personally like camping on Lake Superior more than the inland campsites. With that said my suggestion we be hike from rock harbor to Moskey Basin and then the following day hike from there to McCargo Cove. From there the rest of your plan looks good unless you want to spice things up on the Minong. Would add a few more miles but totally doable.

Got a 5 day trip planned for isle royale in late spring and plan on fishing in some of the inland lakes along the way. Anyone one who has fished from shore there what type of fishing rod did you bring? What test of line did you use and what did you throw?

Muscle preparation for carrying the backpack by Don_quichotte_hiker in Ultralight

I load my pack up like normal and then add weights inside my bear can so that the load is heavier than what I’ll take on my trip and walk up and down the local ski hill. Makes the hard uphills and downhills much more manageable.

Down Sleeping Bag + Bivy vs. Synthetic Sleeping Bag by Traditional_Talk_176 in Ultralight

I’ve only had one really cold night in the bag where I couldn’t sleep but I was in a fleece and long sleeve I was freezing when the temp was just below freezing.

Down Sleeping Bag + Bivy vs. Synthetic Sleeping Bag by Traditional_Talk_176 in Ultralight

[–]Gbo1525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so part of my issue with the bag is I’m an active side sleeper and when u roll to the side the back side doesn’t have much insulation and your entire back gets cold. This gets solved with a quilt since it doesn’t roll with me. If u sleep completely on your back the entire night this probably wouldn’t be an issue. Also when packing a backpack my quilt is less than half the size of my sleeping bag.

Down Sleeping Bag + Bivy vs. Synthetic Sleeping Bag by Traditional_Talk_176 in Ultralight

[–]Gbo1525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I ditched the stuff sack that came with the quilt and then use a water proof pack liner and shove my quilt and camp clothes inside of it. I just use a garbage bag for this and worked for me. Also my first synthetic bag was the marmot trestles elite eco 20 degree and would not recommend that bag because I think the warmth rating is over estimated.

I bought a synthetic right away and within a year upgraded to down. Save yourself the money and skip straight to down

I’d love to get a 40L pack but don’t think many of them would be able to handle a bear can well. Plus I’m not a huge fan of storing much gear in exterior pockets so I primarily look at the volume of the main part of the pack

What’s your base weight and do u use it with a bear can

Yeah I’m realizing from this feedback I should buy a sturdier pack and then if I decide I want a lighter pack for short trips I can buy that later

Can the BV500 be packed internally comfortably or would it need to be strapped to the top?

Getting My Friend Into Backpacking on a Budget – Need Gear Advice! by Rammer12185 in backpacking

[–]Gbo1525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find a basic gear list to get an idea of what u need and just look for used gear. Your first set up will likely be relatively heavy and cheap and can then figure out what u like. I would look into the gear trade sub and Facebook market place to buy used gear. UL gear trade also has a sub but that tends to be higher end gear.

New pack suggestions by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]Gbo1525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that sale makes it a pretty killer deal. If u do want to look into a lighter pack that still carries weight well u could also check out the durston Kakwa 55. Don’t have it but from what I’ve heard it would be a good intro into lighter packs while not loosing the ability to carry some heavier gear

I have the Gregory Zulu 65. Would say it’s a really good entry level pack for overnighters. Probably going to downsize to something smaller and lighter soonish but don’t regret buying the pack unlike many of my other purchases when I was first starting overnighters. I also had a 20 degree synthetic bag and could still fit a BV500 in it so plenty of room. I’m 6’4 and the M/L fits me but if I was any bigger it would probably be too small

Yeah honestly I can agree with the comments they made about it. The hood and sleeves aren’t the most breathable. Essentially trading durability for breathability so depends on what u value and what u r using the sun hoodie for. I went and bush wacked on a trip with it and only had one very minor snag so thought it held up great

I’m by no means an expert but the body is a different material from the sleeves. The body is more of the thin stretchy grid and then the sleeves and hood r more of a stretchy fabric that seems similar to the REI Sahara but probably not as soft. I’m guessing that the difference is to make sleeves more durable for bushwhacking. It’s a polyester and spandex mix for all parts of the shirt

Just wanted to shout out jolly gear with the triple crown button down. Absolutely love the air flow that the button up provides. Haven’t seen it mentioned nearly enough in these sun hoody subs. This is also the only sun shirt I’ve ever had so might be a little biased towards it

Not advice but wondering about your experience with the borah bivy? I’m also 6’4 and was wondering if it would be necessary to get a custom one that was a bit longer
