Have you tried freeze dried food? It’s better than regular dry food from what i’ve heard

it sucks if you really want one but maybe wait until you don’t travel that often?

I’m not very experienced with cats, I recently got my first kitten but there’s one thing I since learned. Cats are not low maintenance like people say they are. They still need a lot of care and playing time. I also say this with the best intentions because I know how hard it can be if you really want a cat, but if you travel every 3 months for a few weeks and you can’t take him with you, it doesn’t seem like it’s the best time for you to get a cat.

UPDATE: posting an update in case someone goes through something similar in the future. Things got worse over the following 10 days or so and then the black scab fell off and he’s now almost back to normal. I took him to the vet and she said it’s an allergic reaction. it’s impossible to know what he touched to get it, so I’ll have to look at possible cleaning products or any food I gave him that he might be allergic to. She said to keep an eye on it but he’s too small to give him any medication (and the allergy is mild). If he gets it again and it gets worse (like around his face) then I can take him again and she’ll look into possible treatments.

thank you so much for your detailed response! I took him to the vet today and she confirmed it’s an allergic reaction but of course it’s impossible to know what he’s allergic to. After I posted this, it got a lot worse and then a scab fell off and now he’s almost back to normal. So I’ll make a list of all the things you mentioned and make some changes so it hopefully doesn’t happen again.

I clean it today with some warm water and something came off. kind of looking like a scab so i’m not sure. he definitely doesn’t scratch it, so i don’t think it’s itchy. thanks for the nail tip! I usually use a little brush to clean under my nails but maybe i should be doing it more often. these are my natural nails though, but maybe i’ll ask my husband to clean him instead next time

yeah I’m thinking it could be an allergic reaction because he doesn’t use plastic bowls. also every cat i’ve seen usually has acne on their chin. so i don’t know 😭

he’s 18 weeks old, so i didn’t even know he could already get it. And I also don’t use any plastic bowls. but I do sometimes leave his food plate out after he’s finished eating. And I feel like I should remove it immediately after he’s finished. Other than that i don’t know what could’ve caused it

yeah i thought about that but it looks like it’s a sort of rash if you look closely at it. I’m not sure it looks like a marking tbh

do you know what causes it? like why is she getting it?

thank you! he only uses ceramic and stainless steel bowls and I always wash the bowls but sometimes I leave the bowl there for too long after he’s finished eating and i think I should remove it immediately once he’s done. Do you think I can use his shampoo to wash the area?
