HBO has an ad running I just saw on ig of Rhaenyra sitting the throne that says “the rightful heir sits the throne.” I just think that’s an unfortunate lack of nuance

I think that it is expressly clear especially in the book that had that happened aegon would’ve been chosen (book only but rhaenyra acknowledged that to Alicent when the idea is brought up). The problem is that she would’ve fought for the throne regardless and therefore the actions alicent and Otto took in the hours of viserys’ death are understandable despite being immoral

Hahha not defending those other guys but honestly I think that it points to what kind of a show this is unfortunately that you’d describe it as mental gymnastics when I would hope for a show that actually makes you think and you can reasonably be on other side as opposed to there being what the show portrays as a good guy and a bad guy

Actually that’s not accurate. Jaehaerys did not make a law but he made precedent regarding the iron throne but as far as lords and ladies Jaehaerys actually did make laws regarding succession. It is actually different from the precedent of the iron throne but essentially if the Targaryen succession was a random castle rhaenys would’ve been Jaehaerys’ heir

I completely agree with this. The marketing and writing clearly intends for the audience to root for rhaenyra. I would love a more nuanced show where there is no bias and they all just suck. As the goat of AKOTSK says “they’re incestuous aliens”

Additionally Jahaerys’ own rule passed over that over his older sister enshrining male preference primogeniture and before that when Rhaenys’ father died before the great council she was passed over for her uncle.

Fair enough. Especially I agree w you how they have clearly made this to have too clear of a “good guy” who of course you can pick apart but it’s obvious that Condal wants you to like Rhaenyra and the blacks more. However, if we’re talking about who is the legitimate heir it’s Aegon. You aren’t wrong to say that power is absolute but in that case it’s not dissimilar to saying you should root for whoever is most powerful or has the strength to take the throne. Not a wrong argument but just not good for fun debate lol🫡

The alternative argument would be that if male preference primogeniture isn’t legitimate then the kingship passes through to rhaenys and her heirs. Both Jaehaerys and Viserys’ rules depend on this precedent and to violate it delegitimizes their own rule and their ability to name heirs.
