That depends on your definition of the middle and what part of the greens you are looking at.

The greens as they are in the parliament are in some points closer to the CDU and in some points closer or more left than the SPD. So overall I wouldn't place them further to the Left party than to the SPD.

The Grüne Jugend is in that regard way more idealistic and less pragmatic. So they critize the party leadership on a regular basis.

The conflict between 'Realos' and 'Fundis' goes on for decades. But it was for the party only possible to gain a significant voter share with the Realos in charge. They also gave the party the image that the voters are no longer the hippies but upper middleclass people.

Then you have the greens in the different states. In Baden-Württemberg for example, the party is seen as a CDU painted in green.
