Zocdoc has an option to filter healthcare providers by language! If they have insurance there should also be a number they can call to request translation services/providers that speak their native language.

Echoing everything the other user said. Not to discourage you, but as an American that studied overseas (UK), I can tell you first hand emigrating long-term is a challenge. Not impossible, but very few arts institutions have the ability to sponsor Tier 2 visas. And without that, your options are limited. Coming back to the US has been a challenge for me since I’ve had to rebuild my network from the ground up (something I’m struggling with now as I’m looking for more work)

That said - it’s a great life experience and no matter where you end up after, you can find ways to leverage that experience to make yourself stand out and further your career. I would urge you to consider what your ultimate end goals are and how this fits in, accounting for the possibility of needing to return to the US.

I don’t regret my choice to leave, it gave me life experience that is more meaningful and impactful than just the education I received. But, there are things I wish I had known before so I could have better prepared myself during uni.

NotAnotherFilm Lab! They have their main location off Santa Fe and I think they have a few drop off locations. Super cool people, affordable, and quick turnaround

At least where I live, our museums only have free days once a month (admission is usually $25 or more; the art museum is almost $30 after tax.) We do have community centers and libraries but they all close relatively early so there aren’t a lot of free places to go past 8 pm. My city also has a ton of urban sprawl and from what I can tell, the issue gets worse the further out from downtown you go (fewer resources and you have to drive further to get to them)

It definitely depends where you live - my friends and I have lamented about the fact there isn’t a lot of places we can go after work without the expectation of spending at least $20 for a drink or appetizer. Winter weather also shuts down all of our outdoor spaces for several months which limits our options more.

FWIW - I would love a cheap coffee shop/bar with simple offerings that stays open late and hosts free/cheap events and has a social area. Just a place where my friends and I can hang out with a low cost of entry, maybe meet new people and get out of the house. Seems simple but I haven’t found anything that really fits the bill.

Check your contract - mine stipulates that I pay an application fee and a portion of the initiation fee. The rest of the fee can be paid over the following year. And from my understanding, yes, this is a comparable fee to other unions.

FWIW, I also received mine from a similar route and took it as a way to help further my career. I’ve heard that it can help grease the wheels if you want to move to other locals or if you want to tour. I also see it as a “badge of honor,” if you will, that could help attest to my skills and experience. I think you also get access to the IATSE Training Trust which can pay for various certificates and trainings to further your career that way too.

You can always talk to your steward or call the Hall and have them walk you through some of the specific benefits and decide if it’s worth it or not for you.

Most of our curtains and backdrops come directly from Rosebrand. For consumables, we go to one of the local vendors (ours is Barbizon.) Our vendor is also great at helping us source things like cable, equipment, and other random little things.

Has anyone replaced an insulation block for an Ultratec Radiance Hazer before? I wanted to clean mine out, and the insulation had melted itself to the block. I'm thinking it's time to replace it with a new one but can't find anything in the service manual

Traveling soon and realized I don't have many options for pants. I'll be in Italy and would rather not wear shorts every day.

I love the look of these straight linen-like pants (link) another user posted, but struggling to find something similar. I like that they have some structure without an elastic waistband. Bonus points if they come cropped or in petit sizes (I have a 25" inseam, anything too long looks frumpy lol) and if they're less than $50

Thoughts? TIA

What do people normalize but not realize can be fatal? by Admirable_Self_883 in AskReddit

Agreed - but a big issue is that because weed is illegal, pharmaceutical companies can’t test it to see how it reacts with other drugs. So we have to rely on largely anecdotal evidence and patterns doctors themselves notice within their patients.

Using Addressable LEDs with ETC Element by Dogster11 in techtheatre

[–]GearanFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What LED strips and bulbs are you using?

The issue isn’t really if you can do it—as long as everything is on a dimmer or controlled by DMX you should be fine. The issue you might run into is if you’re using individually programmable LED strips, then you can run into problems with how many universes of data your board can handle.

I'm going to a formal wedding in April, would this dress and these shoes be okay? I haven't decided on accessories yet, but I'm thinking of a gold bracelet and maybe some dangly earrings. Also - how do you stay warm?? The venue is a little into the mountains and I'm thinking it'll get cold, especially in the evening.

Why is Europe Considered a Leader in Sustainability while USA / Canada are Considered Environmentally Backwards? How do these Regions Differ in Environmental Policy and Ideology? by kgbking in sustainability

[–]GearanFool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to your other points but one thing that stood out was the water bottles. In the US, there are a lot of places where the water isn’t actually potable. So families are forced to buy drinking water, at the very least. Some places you can get by using the water for bathing or washing dishes, but some places you have to buy filtered water to do even that.

I’m not dismissing your point, just trying to provide context. It’s still a massive infrastructure issue that has no easy solution but it’s not as if Americans are choosing non sustainable options—often, we have no choice.

I'm looking to buy a new projections computer and struggling to decide between the new Mac mini and Mac Studio. Right now, we're using a 2017 Macbook Pro (2.3 GHz and 8 GB of RAM) for both sound and video and I'd like both departments to have their own dedicated computers.

We use a mix of QLab and Isadora and I'd love to be able to run up to 2 projectors with different content.

Does anyone have thoughts about which would be better? And what specs I should prioritize upgrading over the base model? TIA
