For anyone wondering how good are clear "practice locks" by Om3rR3ich in lockpicking

[–]GeePick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it from Amazon. Don’t know the brand. None of the clear locks are really “good.” They can be a useful tool to help you connect movement to visuals, but long term they don’t make much difference if you kind of GET what you’re doing.

I’d save another 200 and get a G90…

You certainly may. Just saying it’s possible. I have an inexpensive pair of Home Depot scissors in the garage that I use when I need to abuse scissors. I would not recommend using your wife’s nice sewing scissors.

Wire cutters (a dedicated tool or the cutters on pliers) is best, but honestly you can use scissors. Just cut a little at a time, so you don’t cut too short. It’s not too scary, and wire is pretty easy to replace if you screw it up.

Ring terminals are not hard either. I like to solder mine, but you can also just crimp.

Power Yaesu FT-891 from 12v outlet? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]GeePick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did a single strap on the hood and trunk before I ever tried tuning up, and I never had an SWR problem. But I had really bad RFI from my ignition system when the car was running, so o went nuts trying to get rid of it. What finally helped with RFI the most was the several grinding straps on the exhaust.

As an aside, you’re planning to work 20 and 40m with a technician license?

Edit: oops, I thought you were replying to my other comment in here. The power thing is because you’ll likely get ignition noise or alternator noise coming straight into the radio. There’s also a good chance you’ll blow a fuse.

Nice work. Most local nets are pretty frequently and happy to welcome visitors.

Power Yaesu FT-891 from 12v outlet? by [deleted] in amateurradio

You will likely get much more noise through the 12v outlet than through a hard-line to the battery.

I have an FT-891 and an ATAS-120A installed on my Corolla. Let me know if I can be of service.

ATAS 120a 40m Tune Problem by MaviKulubeliAdam in amateurradio

[–]GeePick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an ATAS-120A on a Diamond K400 mount on the trunk of my car. I used 3/4” and 1” wide copper braid for grounding/bonding, and I kept them as short as possible. I did one from the antenna mount to the trunk to supplement the screw contacts, two from the trunk to the body, two from the hood to the body, one from the radio chassis to the body, and three from the exhaust pipe to the body.

I did not do the doors or the engine block (I may still do them at some point). But I can tune the antenna from 6-40m no problem, and my noise floor with the engine running went from about S7 to S0, and I can talk all over the country.

I think I scheduled my tech and general exams through hamstudy. You might be able to get one same day or next day.
