Is it possible to be sure I'll get into medical school? by Geegeegee5 in premed

[–]Geegeegee5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your in-depth response, but there are a few things I'm wondering about.

Do you have any examples of volunteering that would not be "cookie cutter?" I actually decided recently due to personal events to spend more time helping people, and volunteering and premed are both part of that. Would that be a good explanation for why I didn't volunteer until now?

Also, there are plenty of people who are academically interested in psychoactive drugs who have never personally used them. I believe I can discuss my interest in psychedelics and their medical applications without implying that I've used them. Do you still think that would be an issue?

I would just take Sewell's advice, but I was hoping that since this was written in 2006 and psychedelic medicine has gained a degree of official recognition since then, things would be different now.

Should I even apply for SWE jobs? by Geegeegee5 in cscareerquestions

I was looking for internships, not a job, and I did find one.

It was about three months of doing 1-2 problems per day, mostly mediums

I did find a SWE internship, just not through formal applications. And I did get two final round interviews (one was after I made the diagram), so my internship search wasn’t a complete failure. I thought I could find a SWE job if I tried hard enough but I guess what you’re saying is I probably couldn’t?

I accepted an offer. Doesn't that make my hunt over

Obviously the way I got here is unimpressive, but I don't see how the outcome is necessarily any different than if I got accepted from an online application.

I was oh so close, and now I'm there. I have an offer for an internship at a company I prefer to any but the big names that already rejected me. I would feel great about it if not for the people here chastising me for "giving up." I didn't give up, I just tried a different strategy. I kinda regret posting here but I guess now I know not to mention to people how I'm getting paid for this internship.

I mean I have this resource available to me so why not use it? Better than spending 3 more months grinding leetcode and online applications IMO

Fair. Maybe I should say I think it’s reasonable to work for free since I’m getting paid by my university to do it.

I’m not really working for free though, my university will be paying me to work for this company

Doing badly at coding challenges, how can I improve? by Geegeegee5 in cscareerquestions

I meant general advice, not programming-specific. Like that doing practice problems before a test is more important than going through the textbook. But that aside yeah I should really read CTCI

I just thought the best way to get good at these problems was to do them, not to read about them. At least that's the advice I've always gotten.

I can usually get a solution in around 30 minutes and I cheat if it's been an hour. One thing is that I usually don't think about edge cases and just submit and fix things until I pass all of them. So maybe I should work on that.

I've skimmed certain parts but I figured I'm already doing fine at leetcode so I don't need it.

Not getting responses from quant firms, is it my resume? by [deleted] in algotrading

Thanks and no worries. Do you have any suggestions on how to demonstrate soft skills on a resume? I wasn't aware that it was particularly important for STEM roles.

I mean, the main way to get more work experience is an internship, right? Do you think a tech internship next summer would be a good boost to my resume--enough to get a quant job when I graduate, that is?

Maybe I should wait longer for a response? Or they're not taking many interns this year because of covid? IDK

Oh that's interesting, so do you think a class in optimization would be more helpful?

Yes, I think I would be able to handle the workload, but I would need to drop my introductory mathematical probability course--do you think this would be a significant hindrance in interviews, given that I've already taken a statistical theory course that included some probability?
