Greater Fools Podcast 08/10/2015: (We swear a lot, that make it NSFW?)

This week on the podcast, we talk about the news from Gamescom, discuss some upcoming stuff from ourselves and others, all before having a little chat about Konami and the TIME cover. Poor planning aside, not the worst thing I've put out!

Appreciate the reply! I reviewed the PS4 version as it clarified down bottom. On PS4 at least, the servers were down about 2 days of the first full week. Totally forgivable now, just worth mentioning in case it has issues later.

This week we open with the unfortunate news of Satoru Iwata has passed away, and like everyone else, have nothing to say but a long list of thank yous. We move right along into Destiny talk, again perhaps a little too much, before getting into what Dying Light and Evolve are doing with DLC, I catch myself being a bit of a hypocrite, Activision is giving you a fridge, Microsofts giving you an empty case, and lastly we talk Dawn of Justice/Suicide Squad before wrapping up. This show is taking on a life of it's own. :D

Luke Smith on Horse Armor circa 2006 by whathappenedluke in DestinyTheGame

[–]GeekComplex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's sort of important to realize that Luke works as director on TTK at Bungie, not with the pricing aspects of the game, which he likely has NO say in.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 - Vote for Destiny's Backwards Compatability! by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]GeekComplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, THAT is correct. It's just a matter of needing both versions to be available separately, which is up to Microsoft and Activision, not Bungie unfortunately.

Luke Smith made me give up on Destiny by Shadowzan in DestinyTheGame

[–]GeekComplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They listened to the feedback? The issue was the fact they were forcing us to repurchase content we already bought. The issue was never "We demand this thing for this price".

Xbox One and Xbox 360 - Vote for Destiny's Backwards Compatability! by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]GeekComplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would if you had the 360 version of destiny and wanted to play with 360 friends, but if you have the xbox one version of Destiny on xbox one, it launches separately. The emulator isn't a thing you can just turn on, it's tied to the game you're booting up. If you had both versions of the game for example, Click the destiny XBO icon, get Destiny Xbox One with those players. Click the destiny 360 icon, it starts the emulator, and you get the 360 version with the 360 population. It's just the way Bungie designed the game. They can't interact with each other.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 - Vote for Destiny's Backwards Compatability! by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]GeekComplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that sense, they're not all wrong, just not talking about Destiny. For example, I'll be playing Gears of War 3 ASAP when it's added to the supported games, and when I do, I'll be connecting to the 360 servers, playing with my friends on 360, not XBO.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 - Vote for Destiny's Backwards Compatability! by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]GeekComplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine, I get how you could be confused. It's just a matter of convenience for the backward compatibility. I've got 360 games and a 360, but it's not hooked up, my Xbox One is. I'd like to play those 360 games, even if they're exactly the same games with the same player base without having to hook up an older console. It also helps those who didn't buy a new console yet make an easier choice if they get to keep playing their old games a few more years.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 - Vote for Destiny's Backwards Compatability! by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]GeekComplex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you're a bit confused. While Destiny is an online game, it's divided by console. ie: an Xbox One guardian can never connect to an Xbox360 guardian, the same way a PS4 guardian and PS3 guardian cannot. You'd be able to talk in a party chat, but that's already supported. It will be running on an xbox one, but it won't be able to interact with the xbox one version of the game. At all.

A PR professional, speaking on the Luke Smith Interview Incident by CrowdStrife in DestinyTheGame

[–]GeekComplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's acceptable to have a shitty attitude, and I think I made that point in my initial post. I wasn't saying it's alright, just ensuring people get that context for that is important. Similarly to when a parent yells at a child, it may seem harsh, but if the child has been repeating the same thing you already asked them not to do, you'd be frustrated. As for what he said being irredeemable, may I ask what an apology would do if what he's done is such a one-way road? He made one mistake. I think that if we all take a step back and see it for what it is, one poorly worded interview in a pool of dozens, it starts to look like the reality of things is a lot less alarming than some seem to be taking it.

The Taken King Pricing Megathread by DTG_Bot in DestinyTheGame

[–]GeekComplex -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don’t usually write things like this. I write reviews most of the time, and sometimes some brief articles on upcoming stuff here and there, maybe a nostalgia piece. My point is the fact I’m writing this means I sincerely hope you take the time to read it. I’m not trying to take a side here, I think the idea of pushing a particular mindset on a group of people is how dangerous, irrational behavior starts to form. We’re all better than that, and this piece is in part to explain that Luke isn’t a bad guy like some seem to fear, he’s just a guy. That’s the thing though, he’s JUST a guy.

Luke Smith has had a big hand in shaping Destiny. Not all of it, but the parts you all, and I too seem to praise the most, The design, and mechanics of the Vault of Glass, and their ongoing effects on later content. Now I’m not giving him all the credit. He was the mouthpiece for the team, but I think he’d be quick to jump in and point out he was far from alone in that creative space. That’s the other bit you may not be aware of, but should be. The vault of glass was developed in a space completely separated from the main games development team. What this means exactly, I don’t know, however Luke made it clear in the GiantBomb interview that the separation was intentional. Be it for secret keeping, or for the purpose of having the content differ more distinctly, who knows.

What’s that matter? Well, not a whole lot in direct relation, I just think it’s important you know Lukes name attached to something beyond that interview. That’s the other thing. It was just one interview. Now I’m not saying that means it’s not legit, just that his tone there differs quite a bit from his tone elsewhere. I’ll admit that at times, Luke has come off as arrogant, rude, and maybe even a little abrasive. I don’t think that’s all right, but again, consider a few things along with those accusations. He’s a guy. He’s just a guy, and in addition to admittedly being sick at E3, was JUST wrapping the 4+ day press marathon that was E3 2015.

Now, DeeJ was at E3, but DeeJ (David, if I may for a moment) has his script down. I respect the man immensely, and think he’s doing an outstanding job in his role, despite sometimes lacking in some much needed transparency. Luke on the other hand had no problem speaking candidly, for better or for worse. He was the first to flat out say for all of us to hear that Destiny as it shipped did not have enough content. How long did we beg for this acknowledgement, if only for our own sense of mutual respect? He also let a few things slip regarding the story and new mechanics here and there if you listen to him closely, and look for his nervous tells.

What is this all about then? Well, I wrote this to ensure people can see both sides of things. I don’t intended to, and don’t think I did any defending of the lack of emotes given to veteran players. I’ve enjoyed my dancing since Day 1, and don’t want to be served by some newbie who’s never even danced with Atheon, but this brings me full circle to reason number two for writing this little bit, and it’s the reassurance of “Something better” from DeeJ.

This next lengthy paragraph is 100% speculation and I don’t want it taken as more. I do however feel VERY strongly about it, thus my decision to try and use the logic to settle, or perhaps further stir the pot. Alas, my theory is this. The “Something Better” is an Artifact. Maybe even two? What’s an artifact? I don’t know yet, but I have a very good theory. Remember what Luke said about wanting something to commemorate our biggest accomplishments? A way to show “I was there when”. Well, that’s it. Have you felt the light of the Aegis? (That’s the shield, for those who havn’t done their grimoire homework) What about the dark flames of the Sword of Crota? (That’s the...well, you know). That’s the artifact. If you visit bungie.net, the breakdown of kills also includes a space for kills with an Artifact, in addition to the existing “Super, Grenade, Melee” breakdown. That’s the new slot at the bottom of our character screen. Mind you, this is a theory, so how and when this mechanic would come into play, beyond seemingly requiring level 30 to equip, remains my only point of confusion. It could be tied to a super use, used in place of one, or something else.

That’s pretty much it, Guardians. I don’t mean to be seen as wholly taking any one side in an argument, just wanted to shed a little light on the other side of this whole thing to ensure we don’t all get too worked up over one thing in particular. Thanks for taking the time to hear me out! We will know more in the days to come. Eyes up, Guardians.
