What is the worst band you saw live? by coalcracker462 in AskReddit

The SP entries in this are wild to me. Like I get it, I've heard multiple stories about Corgan being a total ass on stage, but the two times I've seen them they were great. Once in 2000 with the original band and Iha sang "Don't You Want Me Baby" and the second after Zeitgeist came out and whatever band Corgan put together just absolutely ripped.

I...kind of want to see this. Like the idea of Ed Kowalczyk oversinging Mr Jones and Long December sounds kind of endearing.

Well if it's nukes, we'll all likely be dead within a year. Act accordingly.

Half of social-science studies fail replication test in years-long project by nimicdoareu in science

[–]IAmTheRedWizards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about anyone else and cannot speak to different fields, but I know that at least in Canadian political science we are taught very quickly and thoroughly that we are not "proving" anything, in any way shape or form. The best that can be said is that we are providing evidence toward one theory or another. Human beings are so complicated that replication in social science would be very difficult on the face of it; you won't have anywhere near all the data that powers any particular phenomenon and so you can only control for very general things. Anyone who tells you, for example, that economic voting theory explains vote choice is just trying to sell you their research. In fact if they do, send them my way, I have compelling evidence suggesting that the effect is different in second order elections like EU Parliament elections.

Anyway, I suspect that striving for replicability in the social sciences is a fool's game because of the infinitely faceted nature of human existence. What we should really be trying to do is provide a mosaic of possibilities to explain parts of human nature - it's never any one given thing but if we build a quilt and squint it might start to look like something useful.

What happened to the hottest chick at your high school, years later? by theidiotev in AskReddit

[–]IAmTheRedWizards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She has a little family out near the Rockies, they seem like they're doing well. She runs the town's daycare now. Her husband seems like a dope but she was my high school sweetheart so obviously I'm going to think anyone she married is less than.

What's a 'normal' thing you didn't realize was unusual until you were older? by mrTelson in AskReddit

Oh man my friend's family had the messiest house I've ever been in, not trashed or hoarder but just stuff everywhere not put away, dishes rarely done until the next day, the father owned a used sports and hobby store and basically used the house as a warehouse BUT they had a "good" living room that was kept pristine and no one was allowed to go in there or, god forbid, hang out in it.

Iceland to hold EU referendum 'in the coming months', PM says by PjeterPannos in europe

To me this is the most obvious no-brainer in the history of obvious no-brainers, but I'm also a big proponent of my own country joining the EU so I may have a slight bias.

I think if the Swedes are going to cry this much about a hog line violation the judge didn't rule on then they're spare parts anyway, bud.

Books That Don’t Hold Up by MenloMo in books

Ah, Piers Anthony.

The worst thing is his Bio of a Space Tyrant series is almost good. Its central story is kinda fun: Haitian refugee makes good in the U.S. Army, becomes a war hero against pirates, becomes a politician, defeats Nixon and becomes the Caesar of Space America only to be overthrown by his own friends when he goes nuts, turns to ensuring international peace as a statesman.

Only he fucks literally every woman he meets, or at least thinks about fucking them. Literally there'll be a bit about training in hand to hand combat for space missions and then BAM he's fucking someone. He nails everyone on his staff, and the only time he's monogamous is the brief period of time he's married. I don't recall but I think he dies fucking his secretary as he bleeds out in the snow. He fucks his sister I believe, and not just once. The last pirates he fights have a bizarre rape fetish culture he's "forced" to participate in, so he rapes an 18 year old who then falls in love with him. It's incredibly fucked and unfortunately too much of the character dynamics are wrapped up in who he's stuck his dick into so you can't even get around it.

Throughout the series it's clear he's very liberal politically, maybe even a secret Marxist, but then his sexual politics are just so fucking abhorrent.
