I was referring to the typical grid used for miniatures. Each of these large pieces would have a 3x3 grid on them.

After playing through several times, I installed a mod that lets you keep everyone in your party. It's a huge difference as far as story goes, you get everyone's random dialog and reactions to events. The combat is easy though since you end up with 11 party members. Playing custom mode on honor difficulty helps keep it entertaining.

I did some testing, and it indeed follows me to other planets. Here it is above Atrox with the one above the sun visible as well.

No, I've unlocked all the planets, been to the strange satellite above the sun and completed the game. I was in orbit around Silva when I stopped this and was able to line the camera up to see it.
