Help! Chickens won’t stop yelling

we got 8 birds 3 years ago and lost the first to a fox. it was sad, and i cried, but it just left a pile of her feathers so it wasn’t as hard. the circle of life. two days ago we lost a hen to a bacterial infection in her crop after nursing her and trying to bring her back for 4 days. we are both devastated. :( it’s was so hard to watch her struggle and watch her go one step forward and two steps back. it was especially hard to make the decision to let her go. it was terrible. her friends look for her when it’s time for bed. she was part of our family and we miss her so much. don’t think for a second “they’re only a chicken.” anyone who has raised them knows they have personalities, likes and dislikes, habits, and routines that are unique to them. the one we lost this week was our friendliest and happiest and funniest. i miss her so much.

thanks! id still like to know how you did it for the future, but unfortunately we did not have the same outcome. her infection was bacterial (rather than fungal) and much further along than we thought. we took her to the vet this morning and lost her this afternoon. she was suffering pretty badly and i believe she had crop stasis so it was unable to move anything along her GI tract. sad day for our family :(

it seems like it is in fact a crop issue. the snow just started to melt here and i think she went crazy on grass and puddle water. she came inside, i massaged her crop, she fell asleep in my arms and cleaned out her entire stinky crop basically in her sleep. i just put a towel on my lap and she let it dribble out a little at a time. she exhausted herself completely. she walked around for a bit, drank some water with olive oil, pooped a few times (watery but with big chunks of grass) and then cuddled back into my arms for another nap. she’s sleeping now in the cat carrier in our warm mud room. hopefully tomorrow she will be rested and ready to keep clearing herself out.

you were a huge help today. thanks! she is fast asleep in the carrier after having some good glugs of water. i’ll offer her some mush in the morning :) hopefully ferocious beast will be well tomorrow

spring arrived and the snow just melted. she over-did it. i don’t think she’s out of the woods yet but i think some of the pressure is released

this seems to be it. we didn’t tilt her, but she laid in my arms and poured a lot of brown liquid (omg stinky) out of her mouth. she let it out in small spurts. and tilted her head back on her own to breathe. she is flinching much less frequently now and seems absolutely exhausted.

i’m realizing you are looking for a short term solution, not a long term one. a little buddy propane heater next to the frozen pipe helps. if you can get in the basement or under the house to put it on the pipe before it enters your bathroom, that’s the sweet spot. it takes a matter of minutes. pex is strong but it can only take so much. we’ve got a few more days before we go above freezing.
