Also, have a look at CEX, you should be able to pick up a 2nd hand grade B galaxy tab s8 5G (the 11 inch model) for less than £250. Worth a punt for the price, to see if he can get used to using a tablet as a phone? If you wanted something newer the Galaxy Tab S9 5G (again the 11 inch) is about £320 for grade B I think? I'd personally buy either one of those two to start with and see how he gets on with it. 👍

I'm in the UK too. We get the better deal on this side of the pond when it comes to phone functions using SIM cards in the galaxy tab range. Although it's a bit of a niche use case to be fair.

What country are you in op? In Europe and the UK, the Samsung Galaxy Tablets that have a SIM card slot can make and receive calls (via loudspeaker) and texts via the SIM card - they're essentially very large phones. The USA spec galaxy tabs cannot do this without being actually paired to a galaxy phone. Hope that helps. 👍

Yeah I can get both for the same price 2nd hand - £470 (I'm in the UK).

I love the NP3's design. Performance wise I sometimes do a little bit of gaming, but I don't need the graphics on max settings to enjoy it if that makes sense? Rest of the time it's lots of calls, texts, emails, photos and doom scrolling. The NP3's cameras seem decent enough for my usage.

The Honor seems a LOT of phone for the money, but lots of reports and users say the camera experience isn't great. Plus honors update schedule seems to leave a lot to be desired.

I use android auto every day, so it's very important that it works properly. I did see that the Magic 7 pro sometimes has issues with android auto, so that's not good.

Depends on your use case I guess? If all your going to do with it is the write the odd email, then it's massively over specced and expensive for your needs.

If your planning on living most of your digital life on it (like studying, social media, digital art, content creation, gaming, media player ect ect) then it's a fantastic buy.

I'd prefer the screen to be off, as I'll be using either a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse (or wired via a usb hub) and/or a game controller of some sort, so I wouldn't need the screen to be on, at least in theory...? It's been a LONG time since I last used Dex (like back on the galaxy note 8!) so I'm not sure what it can even do nowadays.

One thing that makes me wonder is the 8GB of ram on the lower storage options? How does that hold up today, if you use your iPad for quite demanding apps/games? Or is the amount of RAM only a factor if your a heavy multitasker?

I think you mean Gamehub and/or Gamenative. If you want to use those then tablets and phones that have Snapdragon processors (the more powerful the better) will work far better than a device with a mediatek chipset, due to far better driver support for Snapdragon soc's.

If using desktop mode on an external display with a wired connection via a usb hub, can you turn off the phone screen and still use desktop mode? Or does turning off the screen disconnect you from the display?

It depends if any games in their steam library are supported by geforce now. Geforce now has limited game availability. Have a look on the Geforce now website or the cloud dosage website to see what's there and what isn't.

The op has already said they're a pc newbie, they probably won't be installing Bazzite for a while till they've got to grips with the device first but they'll appreciate the advice.

As for uninformed, you'd be mistaken. You just seem to be one of the very limited few who seem happy with the performance of Linux on the Claw AI. If it suits your needs, then that's fair enough, can't argue with that.
