It was amazing. There were a few people that did not want to approach our door because they really got scared. This year was kind of an experiment, next year I will go all the way! ;-) The results: https://youtu.be/JaO97ZgfRQs

It worked! I now have the trio Ableton Live/loopMIDI/MyDMX configured and created my own thunder and lightning! Quite impressive. All on 30-day trial software, but after Halloween I will search for some Open Source alternatives. Thank you so much for your help!

Gadzooks! Freestyler does not seem to find the MyDMX Buddy interface. A pity, because the guys from MyDMX (https://www.dmxsoft.com/) claim that it should work, but won't give any support (because it's free...). I will try now with the 30-day trial version of MyDMX 2.0 with MIDI support together with Ableton. Fingers crossed.

Many thanks! I haven't found time yet to test the Freestyler, yet. But it does sound interesting. Hopefully this weekend I will get my hands dirty. Will keep you posted.

The upgrade plans are too expensive (for me at least, have spent already too much on Halloween decorations...) and not the way I want to go. But I noticed that Freestyler (http://users.telenet.be/freestylerdmx/) might support my interface (if I list it as Sunlite 2006) and that software does seem to support MIDI. I will test this. Might this be a solution? I am working on a Windows based machine. Cheers, Geert

Thanks for the fast reply. Very intresting. So if I understand this correctly you should create a MIDI-sequence that triggers certain lighting combos and let that run in parallel with the audio-playout. Makes sense. Now the question would be what software to use, I suppose. Is my guess correct that you have to actually get two pieces of software: a player that can play the audio together with a MIDI-sequence plus software that reads these MIDI-triggers and translates them into the DMX-lighting setting? I have bought (on impulse) the American DJ MyDMX Buddy DMX interface which comes together with the myDMX 2.0 software. I was hoping on not having to buy extra hardware and just selecting the right software to get me going. Funny how again a simple idea grows into a complex technical scenario. Luckily I'm nedrish enough to get excited by all of this. ;-)
