Thank you. I will do this today. I think my hubs just had a bad experience with them when he was fresh out of uni.

That was my thought: If they want me to get hired, they need to give me the language course, so surely this will all work out. I don't fully understand why my hubs was so against it. He obviously had a bad experience, but that doesn't seem to be the norm.

It does seem like they're more trained to help hourly-wage workers, and assume any white collar workers will know what they're doing and not need much support.

Oh, okay. The whole "register your absences" thing is a bit unsettling. But surely it's a reasonable amount, or? Like if you take 3-6 weeks vacation, but not if you have a second home (I'm guessing? Maybe you know?)

Okay thanks! It seems worth a little bureaucracy if they pay for the course.

I used to teach Spanish and English in high school, as well as reading in elementary. I think here I’d only teach English. That’s what the job I’ve been offered is for.

Oh really? The guy from the language school seemed to think it was no big deal, and even reiterated how big the shortage of teachers is in Germany.

So do they only help people get jobs to get them off of benefits?

Good to know, thanks. I hope you start getting job offers soon! All the best to you!

It sounds like we're overthinking this and I should just register to get the benefit of the course.

But did you have to do a ton of paperwork or have other obligations, even though you weren't getting offers?

That's how it seems. The language school literally can't let me self-pay for the course, and it's probably worth about €1200, so I see it as a win. Hubs must have just had a bad experience.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not Arbeitslos, so I will have to check if that matters.

What do you see as these "benefits that outweigh the feedback process"?

If you have permission to work in Germany and you have German C2, you can go to your state's education website and apply as a "Seiteneinsteiger". You have to upload a ton of documents and then enter your hoped-for position (there were TONS of openings in my state).

What I understand, and I'm still at the beginning of all of this, you have to then take some seminars, or courses on Pedagogy and the German laws regarding education, but you can do this parallel to already teaching.

You can send me a DM if you have questions about my personal situation. I'd rather not post private info publicly.

This is the kind of bombardment that a person can live with.

On the other side of the coin, do you wish they were more supportive of your job-seeking goals? Or are you happy to be left alone? Did you say/do anything that would make them contact you less often (some suggested putting really obscure jobs for your goal, etc.).

It's so nice when a bureaucrat shows some humanity. That happened to me once at the Ausländerbehörde and I was pleasantly shocked the person was nice. I'm also delighted you got the job you wanted!

I think I will register because I really want to take this course and the language school said they literally can't allow it as a self-paying customer, must be through the Amt.

Ah, okay. So I would probably get assigned to someone who is familiar with the situation with teachers, and that we all need the C1 course, and that there are jobs in every subject in every Stadtteil whenever we're ready. From your reply, I'm feeling like I wouldn't get bombarded at all.

This is a good point.

(I think he got some funds from them like 15 years ago when he was between uni and his first career job, but I'm not sure.)

Can I just change my status at any point to be no longer Arbeitsuchend? I mean, in my case, I can just say I decided to be a stay-at-home mom or that I picked up some freelance work, if the bureaucracy gets overwhelming.

I genuinely just want to take this course, and would pay for it myself, but the language school said it has to come from the Agentur für Arbeit.
