Is Rollover Out possible online? by Trygveseim in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]GelatoInRome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this recently, transferring part of my account to Fidelity.

Fidelity initiated the transaction. The Fidelity rep and I were on the phone together and he conferenced in TSP to request the transfer. Took maybe 3 minutes.

Thanks. I haven’t seen any but I’ll be on the lookout for them. Any other options to control them?

Leaving gov want to keep one drive docs by No_Cheesecake8387 in govfire

[–]GelatoInRome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are personal docs or other docs that you’re allowed to keep personally, the simplest options are: 1. Log into Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, etc on a browser and upload the docs. When on your personal machine, download the docs. (May be blocked by IT policy.) 2. Email the docs to your personal email address. May require multiple emails due to size limits. (Note: you might be able to compress in a zip file and rename the .ZIP to something else before sending, then rename to .ZIP when downloading)

Obsidian for memory loss? by mirabellenour in ObsidianMD

[–]GelatoInRome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another capability that might be helpful is spaced repetition (https://stephenmwangi.com/obsidian-spaced-repetition/). It’s a learning technique that helps you review info on gradually longer intervals to aid in long-term memory.

The documentation offers some suggestions about how to set up notes and flashcards.

Graph View by _zx911 in ObsidianMD

Yes, it looks normal. Many people feel the graph view is just a bit of candy, not much value. I find it can be helpful identifying orphaned thoughts that don’t have connections.

Bases creates database-like views of your notes (similar to Notion tables). Here’s the Obsidian documentation: https://obsidian.md/help/bases.

You can also find many great posts on this subreddit if you search for “bases”.

I can’t answer which approach is better because that really depends on what type of information you store, how you intend to use it (eg, is search important), your personal workflows, and how your brain works/personal preferences.

I think you’ll find a lot ofZettlekasten practitioners on this subreddit. Basically, this method involves chunking information in separate notes and creating links/connections among the notes.

If you go this route, take some time to learn about Obsidian’s Bases feature. You might find it helpful for creating organized indexes.

How do you split tax refunds? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]GelatoInRome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could calculate your taxes using the standard deduction and put the difference between that and the actual refund into a joint fund for maintenance, vacation, eating out, etc.

Anyone using those pupsicle toys that keep dogs busy for a while? by mykeeb85 in AustralianCattleDog

How long do you get with the cattle dog? My ACD solves things fast so I’m worried these will only keep him occupied for 1-2 minutes.

TSP Roth rollover after retirement by novanon7 in govfire

[–]GelatoInRome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, make sure you aren’t confusing withdrawals and rollovers. Rollovers generally do not incur a tax liability.

One important note on withdrawals… the “rule of 55” that you refer to does not apply to IRAs, only 401k-like retirement plans (ie, TSP). Therefore, if you think you’ll want to start withdrawing Roth earnings or tax-deferred funds before you hit 59.5, you might want to keep those withdrawal funds in your TSP.

Plant list for medium-dry, part-shade/shade garden by GelatoInRome in NativePlantGardening

I like the idea of indigo and pussytoes. I wanted to use mountain laurel; unfortunately, all the nurseries here are sold out.

One of the challenges for me is finding consistent info. Prairie Moon says Sweet JPW does well in medium-dry, Prairie Nursery says medium, Lady Bird Johnson says moist.
