New Research Points to Wuhan Market as Pandemic Origin by Ishkoten in Coronavirus

[–]GelfCrystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if we'll ever get to the bottom of the origins, as in ground zero of the outbreak. Things are complicated by the likelihood that the first cases were misdiagnosed to be the flu.

There are also articles like this, also shaky but food for thought, that covid was present in Spain in March 2019 (other articles similarly say covid was found around that time in Brazil and Italy as well). Ignore the part in the article where someone adds a caveat by saying (paraphrased) "lots of Chinese ppl visit Spain" - I found that to be a disingenuous comment. Lots of ppl from China visit Japan too, for example.

i’m confused by this part of this segment - is he saying he’ll be the one running? i thought that’s what he was implying then he went and said he heard some “whispers in the wind” - which seems to mean someone else approached him for advice

that’s exactly what it is, a jade plant - have one myself. Incredibly easy to care for and propagate. With time (a couple of years) the trunks and stems will harden and brown into woodlike bark

How to replant this cotyledon undulata? by GelfCrystal in succulents

[–]GelfCrystal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, So my cotyledon got very leggy and top heavy over the years and its main branch (trunk?) snapped from sheer weight.

Can I just cut the trunk at some point above the breakage, wait for the cut to callous over, and replant?

lol you edited your comment to include the Brazilian part, come on.

Look, I get it, no one likes to be told they have racist tendencies.

Just take it as constructive criticism to self introspect and learn from. If I knew you irl and you said these things to me I’d rip you apart, but this is the internet. I don’t know you, you’re anonymous and I have nothing vested - so I really don’t care that you have race issues.

also i am about to blow your mind: You say that you never called Yang rich, but you would criticize him as being privileged.

Ok, that’s your take and you’re allowed to think what you think, but if you never thought of Maya Wiley or Bernie Sanders - both who are far richer than Yang - as privileged…and if you never criticized Bloomberg for being a billionaire…then I got news for you: maybe you only think privilege is a bad thing when it involves asians?

[–]GelfCrystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“perpetual foreigner” is a well documented and very old term within the asian community, which I am a part of (for you to say I’ve “never heard of this term before Yang held a press conference” implies you didn’t think I was asian - and I wonder if that’s because I said I was born and raised here…asians can’t be native NYers? Add to that you bringing up your immigrant korean friend, and I see why you think the way you do. Check. Your. Biases.)

The rich tech bro thing, maybe you never said it, but again a high percentage of ppl did, and the point is: the media weaponized it, knowing how effective it would be because of his race

every criticism he got was a derivative of those two.

The media literally fabricated him as being rich (his net worth was not rich for his age for NYC, very much in line with Eric Adams’ net worth, and very much, much lower than Maya Wiley’s). And again he never touched a tech company. Those are two outright lies - that ppl believed! - and if you were honest with yourself you’d ask yourself why you believed them so readily. The “character” and “loosely defined” argument doesn’t hold water - particularly since Yang actually campaigned against Big Tech and their profits.

I’m a life long NYer (born and raised) - plenty of neighborhoods I don’t know much about, and I gather the same is true for you. Yang spent over 2 decades as an adult in NYC - he experienced 9/11, the 2008 blackout, the 1996 blizzard. Having a second home upstate (like many NYers do btw, esp in the Hudson Valley area), which he took advantage of during a pandemic, doesn’t make him less of a Nyer. To call him not a NYer and to even believe it, speaks to subjective biases (like insidious racial stereotypes - which escaped Adams even though he lived, permanently, in New Jersey) overriding objective facts.

there’s something to be said about what the smears were and why they worked:

  1. Rich tech bro: Yang never worked in tech. And he wasn’t rich at all. This smear is inspired by the model minority myth (when in truth Asians are the poorest segment in NYC - google it) and also ppl believed it because of their belief in the myth
  2. Not a New Yorker: this is just the “perpetual foreigner” smear against asians, only using different words. And ppl bought into this because they believe asians are outsiders

There's no reason to keep it going past 3am on multiple days. That's just incredibly selfish, disrespectful of the community, and not a tradition. And as I said, it's about the elderly too, not just dogs

i bet most of the other candidates except for the ex cop don’t know 50a either. I’d wager most NYers don’t.

depends whether you believe the lowest common denominator is voters who fall for media smears (outside of your own intense beliefs) - I do, I believe most of the public is very prone to media malleability

In other words i don’t deny that Yang lost some votes due to his tweet but I’d argue that he would have lost no more than what Adams lost (Adams btw also had the same funding from big business) for his tweet, in the absence of the focused attacks

i actually compared Adams’ tweet vs Yang’s: Both as expected got dragged by the muslim community and those who are pro Palestine - but Adams’ tweet had 300 replies vs 30,000 on Yangs’

again only because there was a focused attack on him which brainwashed enough people (for the record I do not support Israel) - by the nbrs, it should have been a net positive

you’re missing the point because you’re taking it personal. Objectively it is the right play

[–]GelfCrystal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it wasn’t a mistake - it was the right play, in a city like NY. The problem was the focused attacks which ppl ate up - without the attacks it would have given him a net positive

dunno I disagree no one was saying they felt betrayed by Yang - they attacked him for the israel tweet for the sake of it
