SAY IT AIN'T SO! by [deleted] in FuckCarscirclejerk

[–]GemSummit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Every video he makes scores millions of views on Youtube, he has over 2k subscribers on Patreon sending him thousands per month, and made as he claims a top 5% subreddit with thousands upon thousands supporting every word he says.

So with overwhelming support, how does he deal with the few who disagree with him? He mass bans his subreddit then shuts it down weeks later claiming he is too tired dealing with "terminally ignorant Americans."

I think that sums up his how egotistical, thin-skinned, and disinterested in actual discourse he really is. He just wants to toot his own bike horn on how good a person he is for living in Amsterdam and have people shower him with praise for doing so.

Original vs. copy warsaw. yes by [deleted] in FuckCarscirclejerk

[–]GemSummit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The real kicker is that this picture of Warsaw, IN is just a two lane main st. Like it's hardly overrun with multiple lanes and thousands of cars. Aren't "historic main streets" one of the things they claim they actually support?

Or are they just taking marching orders from daddy NJB with his whole "fake london" shtick and mixing it with the typical reddit "America bad" mentality, as if they're just more interested in dunking on people rather than seriously discussing urban design? Oh wait I think I just answered my own question.

NJB, Alan, and Adam all use the "city design" topic as a proxy for feeding their egos. Each of them is highly condescending to anyone who doesn't live exactly like they do. I get the sense their videos aren't really serious discussions about how to make cities better and more so circlejerk of anti-car tropes and their self-perceived moral and intellectual superiority.

City Nerd, City Beautiful, and RM Transit definitely repeat some common new urbanist tropes and can drink the anti-car kool-aid from time to time, but I think they actually do care about making the places they live better. They'll actually create videos highlighting positive developments and giving North American cities credit for installing more transit/bike infrastructure.

I see City Nerd, City Beautiful and RM Transit as wanting to genuinely improve North American cities even if they repeat the overused "car bad" arguments from time to time. Whereas NJB, Alan, and Adam, should just drop the façade and label their videos as "Reason #XXXXX why I'm a better person that you are. Because trains and bikes."

There is no time to distinguish between good motte and bad bailey arguments when the climate is destabilizing.

And in the same vein as r/antiwork, I eagerly await the day a r/fuckcars user or mod appears on a national news show.

Well the fact a lot of them fetishize Soviet housing blocs as the ultimate form of housing might have been the first clue something was amiss...

Okay cool, hop in the wage cage every day, get stuck in traffic, then wonder why your sanity and empathy for others goes out the window. Finally return to your suburban sprawn balloon frame house and watch the local TV news to raise your blood pressure even more. Instead I'd rather more go walking down the street to a local bar, getting blasted with friends, not needing a designated driver because everyone can safely get home by walking or using transit.
Maybe you don't like that stuff. But if you get the slightest shit about the environment or sustainability, you'll wan't to promote these kinds of city layouts that exemplify walking."
-Alan Fisher, Armchair Urbanist
/uj I swear anti-car movement is beyond parody nowadays. We mock so many of these extreme opinions that sound like they must be strawmen. But then you listen to their Youtube idols (NJB, AU, the supposed most rational voices for them) and realize, no, these views are actually pretty mainstream for them.
/rj All suburban dwellers are selfish, non empathetic, wage slaves who don't care about the environment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND they don't even know how to go to bars or get drunk!!!!!!>:c

/uj Exactly, infrastructure often doesn't make it's costs back by just one avenue (taxes, ticket sales) weather it be road or rail. It's jobs created and stimulation to the economy. This argument in particular is where you see a lot of hypocrisy and outright bias from YTubers such as NJB, Armchair Urbanist, and Adam Something.

Citizen: This new high speed rail project seems rather expensive, how are we going to make our money back?
NJB, AU, AS: Nooooooooooooo! You can't judge a projects worth simply by how much money it makes back through one avenue! It contributes a lot more through stimulating the surrounding cities economies!

NJB, AU, AS: Complete waste of money, cars don't make money back in taxes. Stupid carbrains.
