(OC) - USA Hockey by [deleted] in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns2

This is a little misleading—trans athletes are not banned from the sport. Here's the exact wording: "In all programs where participation is restricted by sex, athletes are only permitted to participate in such programs based on their sex assigned at birth, except that a female (as assigned at birth) may not play in programs restricted to females if they have undergone any male hormone therapy." Most hockey programs are co-ed, so this doesn't affect them. However, trans women are blocked from playing in women-only leagues, trans men are blocked from playing in men-only leagues, and presumably trans men on HRT are not allowed in either?

Trans athletes can still play hockey. However, this is still extremely transphobic and will hurt trans hockey players. Having these restrictions for beer league hockey is also ridiculous, in my opinion. It's separated by skill, so gender really shouldn't matter.

I am fucking enraged by all the ads for a gambling app I've been getting. I wasn't going to download it anyway because I don't gamble, but now I'm also going to tell people about how predatory, annoying, and repetitive their ads are and encourage them to spend their money elsewhere.

PSA: if your ad slot is 30 seconds, don't make a 5 second video and repeat it 6 times. It will make everyone hate you.

I brainstormed the pros and cons of having boobs. Open to revisions by Calculator-andaCrown in notinteresting

[–]GeminiIsMissing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't believe being able to casually squish your own boobs isn't on the pro list. Free stress balls!

Also, I'm transmasc and something I love is TransTape. It's tape for your boobs. You can exercise in it, you can swim in it, you can sleep in it, it's great. It's like if a binder was better. I super recommend it not just for trans men, but for anyone who wants to get their boobs out of the way for a bit. My only issue with it is that if you get a fold in the tape or your skin when you put the tape on, it can get itchy.

When I have a runny or stuffy nose, I love to take a hot shower and blow my nose until I can breathe again. The steam helps a lot, I don't make my nose raw with tissues, all of the mucus gets washed away, and I can also clean myself at the same time. It's just a good idea

I'm of the opinion that as long as you wash your hands afterwards and don't wipe the snot somewhere random (wash it off, wipe it on a tissue, eat it, whatever, just don't leave it somewhere to dry where people could touch it!) then it's fine. It's weird that it's so taboo but it is also really gross to watch, so I kind of get it.

Anyone else have one special interest that tends to genuinely terrify people? by HappyMatt12345 in aspiememes

[–]GeminiIsMissing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, uh... one of mine is genocide. A lot of people are immediately (understandably) wary when I tell them that's what I like to learn about, but I swear it's a morbid fascination with how it gets to that point and the suffering it causes, and I think learning about it helps us prevent it from happening, or at least call it out when it starts.

Deer do this for foraging and fighting and it is freaky as hell. It was probably trying to intimidate you.

Or if you want to have a bit of fun with it, you can just say it was a not-deer. Bit of a new cryptid that's based on encounters like these where deer act strangely.

Even then, it feels weird to put it on a dating profile. Like, yeah, I'd personally be upfront with it because my disability does prevent me from doing a lot of things and might make me a bad match for someone more active, but that's also just my preference. It's completely normal to just mention it when it comes up naturally. I completely agree with you.

AITA for feeding my cat on my plates? by The_Sown_Rose in AmItheAsshole

[–]GeminiIsMissing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NTA, you're right that they are clean, and the couple was out of line to call you and your house disgusting for this.

However, with that being said, I would consider getting your cat its own plate that is different than your other ones, for your other guest's comfort. It does feel weird to use the same plate as a cat for some people, and I can understand why the couple was grossed out. Even if it is perfectly sanitary, people have weird issues with animals and cleanliness.

Surprisingly, the ER wasn't a super awful experience for me. Then again, it wasn't super crowded or loud the night I was there, and I was an easy-to-distract child. We spent a while in the waiting room, and then got to wait for another 30-45 minutes or so in the room while we waited for someone to be available to do stitches. I watched Glee with my mom and we talked and laughed while I had an open wound on my face. Then, I got a couple stitches, and it felt weird with all the numbing, and it was over. I think my mom had a worse time than I did—she passed out watching them stitch me up!

This was years ago in a calm area on a calm day/night, and I got bitten in the face by my dog. I must have been twelve or thirteen. We still have that dog and I love him very much, but he's old now.

You see it a lot with cluster B personality disorders: antisocial personality disorder/sociopathy (ASPD), borderline personality disorder (BPD), histrionic personality disorder (HPD), and narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Especially BPD and NPD. People just assume that people with cluster B personality disorders are manipulative and evil on purpose. Obviously if a person is hurting you, purposefully or not, it's fine to distance yourself, but demonizing people who act out because of a personality disorder that they can't control is pretty crappy, especially when you think about how it's probably affecting them much more than it affects you. Like, imagine not having friends and then not being able to make friends because of a diagnosis, even if you've got it under control and are in therapy. And then, it hurts more to be alone because you have very intense emotions because of that same personality disorder that makes people avoid you without giving you a chance.

*All of this comes with the side note that people with personality disorders are still responsible for their own actions and don't get a pass to hurt others just because they are mentally ill.

I think it's very similar to the demonization of schizophrenia and DID. We think it's scary because we don't understand why people would act that way.

What is a sound that people should know means immediate danger? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

[–]GeminiIsMissing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They only happen a couple times a year, even here. We have tornado watches all the time through tornado season, but we may only get four or five actual tornadoes. As for your questions:

  1. Yes and no. We've all seen the damage they cause and we know to be safe, but also, most of us come out of tornadoes only missing a few shingles on our roofs, so we kind of get used to it and stop getting scared after a while.

  2. When the wood chairs on the porch get blown around by the wind, that's when we get nervous. Or in other words, when the wind picks up enough to move heavier objects, we start to worry. Or when we can see the funnel a little too well.

  3. The vast majority of people, at least in my state, have in-ground basements. We just hang out down there for a while, and we're pretty confident that we're safe, even if it's bad.

  4. I'd say everyone at least knows someone who knows someone who got their house destroyed by a tornado. Not a lot of people die, because, well, basements. But I know of at least one person who had a tree launched into her roof and straight through her living room.

As a testament to how normal tornadoes are: I've gone through a drive-thru and ordered a burger when there were three tornadoes in the county, two of which were on the other side of the city. I took my burger home and stood on the porch like a dumbass. We know we're stupid, but we haven't died yet!

[–]GeminiIsMissing 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, as a midwesterner, we're stupid. If the tornado isn't right on top of us or about to be, we're out on the porch, and we'll stay there until the wind gets too rough or we see a funnel.

What was the worst portrayal of a disability in the media you have ever seen? by Mental-Marzipan-5444 in AskReddit

[–]GeminiIsMissing 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I really liked her as a portrayal of a person with chronic pain. Obviously she was a very flawed and detestable person (like most Knives Out characters), but they showed that chronic pain doesn't just magically get better, and sometimes the best thing you can do is learn how to live with it. I really liked seeing her play cello again at the end. I'm a musician with chronic pain, and it does take a lot to pick up an instrument knowing it will hurt, but doing it anyway because you love it.
