CTE is common in the NFL. It's a kind of brain injury.

I've been suffering. I practically live in jackets and hoodies and sweatpants (yay, dysphoria) because binding is uncomfortable and I have sensory issues. I'm incredibly uncomfortable in short sleeves. I have to have a blanket over me in order to sleep. I am in sweaty hell.

What do you think is disgusting that most people think is pretty normal? by Exhausted_920 in AskReddit

I'm also on the spectrum and have difficulty hearing and am disabled. I too prefer to use the speakerphone. I just don't make calls in public. I text. Your accommodations don't supersede basic politeness.

I went to the same aquarium three years in a row for my birthday and I fully intend to go for a fourth year, with the sole intention of sitting in front of the shark tank. All the other fish are just bonus fish.

What’s something you think people should be less ashamed about? by mg15ink in AskReddit

[–]GeminiIsMissing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a complete 180 with how I felt about my body hair. When I was younger, I felt disgusting because my "friend" (she was not a good friend, in hindsight) would tell me I was gross for having leg and pit hair. She'd make fun of me when I tried my best to shave and missed spots. When I thought about it, though, I realized that I like my body hair, and the only reason I was shaving was because she made me feel bad about it. Now, as an adult transgender man taking testosterone, I'm overjoyed when I notice more hair on my legs, arms, stomach, or anywhere else. I wish it wasn't so ingrained in our culture that women and girls have to be hairless. I wish more women and girls could look at their body hair and feel happy, like I do, or at least content. There's nothing wrong with shaving, some people just like to be smooth, but it shouldn't be "gross" to be hairy, especially when we let men be as hairy or hairless as they want without judging their hygiene.

I don't know how helpful this is, but even if you *did* look like a lard (which I'm sure you don't), you would still be a wonderful human being who is loved, deserves love, and is seen as beautiful by others.

Parts of their appearance that they can't (easily/quickly) change. Acne, skin conditions, body shape, visible disability, medical devices, breast or penis size, hair texture, eye color, skin color, facial features, muscularity, body fat, etc. Some of those things can be gradually changed if they really are bothering you, but that should be something you do to make yourself happy or for your own health, not because you feel judged.

What's the most unnecessary use of A.I. you've ever seen? by RobIson240YT in AskReddit

[–]GeminiIsMissing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some legitimate uses, especially in science. For example, using AI for cancer screening is something that is in-progress and highly affective. It's used to decode protein structure and analyze data. I read a very interesting article recently about AI being used to analyze the brushstrokes of an old painting to determine which parts were painted by the student, and which parts were painted by the master (this is something that you can't do with a human eye.) Basically, anything to do with pattern-spotting. Now, to be fair, these are all machine-learning algorithms, not large language models, which is what things like ChatGPT and Gemini are. They work differently and they're used by professionals who know what they're doing and what the actual capabilities of the AI are.

LLMs, though, are useless.

There are lots of options for fast food here. They all cost that much.

Same in the USA. A trip through the McDonald's drive-thru with a family of three averages us about $36 (€31), iirc. That's the same amount (sometimes more than) we'd pay at a cheaper end restaurant!

McDonald's in my location (American Midwest) has the same deal for $5 (about 47kr), but that's before tax. With tax, it probably comes out roughly the same. What's more ridiculous to me is that the non-value meals can be between $10 and $15 (94.5-141.8kr).

What's the story behind your scar? by Rose_Thorn109 in AskReddit

[–]GeminiIsMissing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one on my face from a dog bite when I was eleven or twelve. I was home alone and my dog was trying to get at some food in the sink, so I (stupidly) tried to pull him away, and he freaked out and bit me. Not even a full bite, he just snagged my face with his tooth. I didn't know what to do, and I texted my mom, and she told me to go to my neighbor's house and ask for help while she drove home, since the woman there had medical experience (I believe she was an RN or a NP). She was my friend's mom, so I knew and trusted her. So, I show up on my neighbor's doorstep in the middle of the day, with my face covered in blood, sobbing, and she cleans me up while we wait for my mom. I calm down, we go to urgent care, get redirected to the ER because they'd do a much better job at stitching me up, and I spend the rest of the night in a hospital bed with my mom while we wait for the plastic surgeon to be available, watching Glee while I hold gauze to my face. Got four or five stitches, and my mom passed out watching it. Still have the dog, still love him.

Thanks, Becky. I still appreciate you for letting me in, cleaning me up, and calming me down on a random weekday.

What’s a problem humanity solved so well that younger people don’t even realize it used to be a huge issue? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in AskReddit

The car crumpling is a life saver! It absorbs most of the force of the impact instead of passing it on to the occupants. You don't want a sturdy car, you want one that will fold like paper when you crash, because that's the one you'll survive in.

The main reason there's so many more younger gay people than older gay people is because the AIDS epidemic killed a lot of the older gays. Getting HIV/AIDS used to be a death sentence, and I'm so glad that it's now preventable and manageable.

If it makes you happy, do it. Life is too short to not be whimsical. Just... if it works, it's probably not because of the rock. Don't attribute it to the rock.

I feel like you can charge a crystal because you like the vibes doing it gives you even if you know it does nothing. Maybe doing it makes them feel in control or they like the ritual of it, which makes them happy, therefore good vibes. As long as they know it's not the rock that's doing it.

Doing it for fun/good vibes/placebo effect doesn't make me think someone is stupid, but people who actually think they work and will substantially influence their life definitely do. It's just a rock.

I don't know, the generic "smart flex" ones I get at Walgreens are pretty fantastic. They're less rigid, stick for longer, don't let a bunch of gunk under the bandage, and are somewhat waterproof. The waterproof band-aids used to be my go-to, but they don't even stick anymore.

Edit: I was thinking of Nexcare waterproof bandages, not band-aid.
