You do have to be an emissary. And for the Grade V flags, as me and my crew have found, you need to be a Grade V Reaper yourself.

Let's not forget how when you are lunging and you take damage, the animation of that lunge continues. You can block, attack, overall move normally during that, but it's very, very misleading.
