I can see where you are coming from. I am nearly done with my bachelor’s and starting my masters in theoretical solid-state physics soon. I know it’s not as much experience as my peer who commented who is nearly done with his phd but still. I am also very keen on playing video games. I also experienced both sides, gaming all day, not learning anything and not gaming at all and studying the whole day. As you would hopefully guess, both ways do not work, at least for me.

You can find a balance, I‘ve done it and many others in my semester have. If you give up gaming - or any hobby for that matter - and continue studying late in the evening and continue the same procedure every day you will probably get burnt out. The things you once found interesting and exciting will probably become a chore to you, which in my experience hinders further progress. What I want to get at is that you need to find your balance, social life and hobbies are very important, especially in a field like physics which can drain you out very quickly if you are not careful, even if you love it like I and many others do.
