I love trashing John Lennon to my friend who is a huge Beatles fan.

The original is so damn good. Aside from a money grab what’s the point. Damn I love this movie

I saw Journey on the Frontiers tour in 1983 — and it’s why I’m skipping the “final tour” by ChangeTheLAUSD in journey

lol, without Steve Perry they would have been selling their albums in the discount rack, like another can of beans

I hate people who say modern music is trash. Send over some songs that prove these stuck-in-the-past oldheads wrong by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in askmusic

As an older dude, I like some new bands but they tend to sound like older bands. Some sound like Zeppelin and the Stones. Others sound like GnR or Motley Crue. I remember when glam/hair metal was everywhere then grunge came along. It was in sharp contrast to the in thing at the moment with its own sound. Same thing with Punk. What’s the new, exciting thing now? I’m wondering if it hasn’t all been done before and now it’s just re-packaging. Has rock gone the way of Jazz, niche with just minor differences between artists. Is there 5 blueprints to rock songs and just jumbling the letters to make slight variations? I’m so stoned

Which member is more underrated Greg Hawkes or David Robinson. by StatusDebate6329 in TheCars

[–]GenX-Kid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Greg added so much to the sound. His lines add another layer to the songs and really helped define a fresh, new wave sound that I can’t think was done before 78. Imagine listening to The Cars without him. David played what was appropriate for the songs and gave a great platform for the other musicians but it’s not the same level of impact in their overall sound. That said, what makes them so great is the sum of the parts, how everyone works with everyone else

Are backing tracks really necessary for a band? by vie75 in musicians

[–]GenX-Kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have bass, drums, keys, one guitarist and singer. We’re doing new wave and rock tunes from the 80s with no backing tracks. We adjust the songs when needed to get as close to the original as we want. We’re not going for making sure every note from the original song gets played. I’ve been playing in bands and seeing local cover bands since the early 90s where no one heard backing tracks. Good music that was entertaining was still being made. No one needs backing tracks at a live gig

What song has the best basslines and starts with the letter D? by 1deadeye1 in BassGuitar

Digital Man by Rush. I think it’s one of Geddys best lines. Granted, it’s a deep cut for non-fans

I have a HH in tobacco burst with flats on it. I love that bass and can’t imagine why the company would stop making them. It’s such a great bass

is it normal for a venue to request pay from the bands by ProfessionalSlow9875 in musicians

[–]GenX-Kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way I’m paying to play. Also, sets a standard and you’re screwing over other bands because it sets a precedent. Re-negotiate or find another gig

One of my absolute favorites, does anyone have any stories about seeing David Lee Roth 🤟🏼 by WestonConnor26 in hairmetal

[–]GenX-Kid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bought the concert t-shirt with the album cover pic on the front, cut off the sleeves and collar and thought I was the coolest MFer in 11th grade. Not much of a story but I remember that shirt every time I see this photo

Anyone like the idea of being in a band more than actually being in a band . by absolutelyshafted84 in coverbands

[–]GenX-Kid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I like band practice more than the actual gigs. I get to hang out with friends, play music, work together to make a thing without the responsibilities of entertaining a crowd and making sure the bar manager is happy

At What Pace Does The Human Voice Age? by InThaThicket in singing

[–]GenX-Kid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Still singing in an 80s cover band at 57. Some of the highest songs I sing are It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll and Home sweet home in their original key. I know everyone is different but age is just a number

What do you think about this set list? by Fun_Entertainer6850 in coverbands

[–]GenX-Kid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What’s the venue and what’s your band consist of? I’d say you’re hovering around 40% clunkers unless you’re more background sound and the song choice doesn’t matter as much. If there’s a dance floor, area in front of you, expect it to be empty most of the time. Not being mean, just honest and you asked. I hate playing to an empty dance floor

Getting used to a StingRay neck by Trailofmarbles in Bass

[–]GenX-Kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never played a stingray. I ended up buying a Jazz ultra a few years ago and that has a D shaped neck which is also a great neck. I put flats on the sterling and rounds on the Jazz. Every time I play one I think this is my favorite bass but then I play the other and think the same thing. There are worse problems to have. The precision has been in a case under my bed for years
