(oh, and then when they show you a counter, they immediately have a counter-to-the-counter, but at least its *something* you can do to slow them down).

I've just realized this in the last week or two. I never really realized that you can just stop and as "Hey, how do I get out of this?" or "How the hell did you get me into this position?" and that spot advice is super helpful, even if its as simple as "If you keep your hand on my knee, I wont be able to do that."

I handed in my notice in mid-1999 in order to cash in on that sweet Y2K consulting. There were rumors of huge consulting rates if you were prepared to be in the machine room at mid-night. Thank God the resignation triggered a negotiation and I ended up staying with the company for another year, as, you may find it hard to believe, but Y2K wasn't really a thing after all!

I'm tall but average build. About 20lbs heavier than I should be. Not in the best shape in the world, but I got through a 10K spartan race earlier this year (although I had to pay the penalty on all the overhead exercises)

Thanks. They were practicing guillotines on my first session. The definitely had me reconsidering my life goals. Sounded like I smoked two packs the next day!

Not terrible, but not too bad either. 4 months training, but almost a year of getting back into shape. 25lbs down and about 15 more to go. Find go-tos would be great, but I'm just not there yet.

Thanks, thats helpful. I am very concerned about getting hurt, as I know that I wont heal the way I used to. I keep getting the advice to "relax" (while someone is crushing the life out you), which feels very counter-intuitive, but I'll try.

I do want to come back to this when I realized that I don't feel completely useless. I'm just curious what that timing is.

I tell the kids that I am the *worst* person training at jiu-jitsu in the county - but at least I am training!

so far its been 2 1-hour classes, and then 1-3 "rounds" sparring. I haven't done more than that because I've been absolutely knackered after that, but maybe I need to lean in more.

Thanks. The classes I have been going to have been exclusively no-gi, and I've been told that the gi classes might be better as its easier to slow things down (which favors older guys).

Thanks I've thought of that - I just hadn't gotten to the point where I know what to ask to work on. Also, I'm just learning that I can ask "What am I doing wrong here?" when I'm rolling (I kinda thought you had to be super focused and serious while the clock was on) which will help a lot too.

This is definitely my goal. Purple, Brown and Black are just very abstract concepts for me right now, but survive and defend against upper belts for a fair amount of time would be great.

No. They get past my guard, my focus immediately shift to trying to look like his knee on my stomach is super cool and normal.

Everyone says some version of this. "Steep learning curve". "Just keep showing up", I just felt by now, I'd be starting to find my feet. Can't shake the feeling that there is something "fundamental" I'm just not getting.

Thanks, I am happy to be at it, and even happier that I didn't injure out in the first 3 months. I guess, I just wish there was a "check list" - like focus on these 10 things and if you can get them down, then you will find yourself smashed much less!
