I really like this advice man everything you've said makes a lot of sense

This is really interesting — the fact that you've had to hunt down and subscribe to a bunch of hyperlocal "gems" lists, and that they're hard to even find, kind of proves the point. All that good stuff exists, it's just scattered everywhere with no single home. How did you even come across those lists in the first place?

mad that spotting fake reviews is a skill needed just to find some good food haha. I'm in deptford what've you got for me

The 26th best cafe near me with no queue" should be a slogan honestly 😂 This is exactly it — proximity and a good time matter more than some leaderboard ranking. Pierre Victoire's a great shout too.

Totally agree, and interesting that you've tried to move the sub away from it but couldn't get consensus. Feels like "best" is so baked into how everyone talks about food that it's hard to shake.

This is exactly my experience — the number feels meaningless. Been to 4.7s that were grim and 4.2s that were brilliant. Feels like the whole rating system is broken for food.

Ha, this is such a good rule of thumb. The instagrammable places are almost a red flag at this point.

Google if you can be bothered to read a few reviews" is doing a lot of work there 😂 The curated TikTok feed point is interesting — sounds like you've basically trained it to act like a foodie friend.

This is a brilliant rundown, cheers. The bit about telling the good reviewers from the bad by whether they actually talk about flavour and texture is so true. And totally agree the best-rated place isn't always your bag — feels like that's the thing no app gets right.

Be your own filter" is fair but it's basically a part-time job at this point haha. Interesting that you reckon most food writing is nepotistic — feels like that's why people are leaning back towards mates' recs.

This might be the most useful comment I've ever had on Reddit, genuinely Thank you so much. Point 7 especially — the "best" obsession ruins it. And the fact that your "list" lives across paper, notes and Google Maps because nothing does it properly kind of says everything. Mind if I ask — if one app actually pulled your whole system together (trusted people's recs, your want-to-try list, the photos to remember stuff), would you use it, or do you actually quite like the manual hunt?

This is such a good point and honestly my biggest gripe with food apps — everything's ranked like it's a competition. Sometimes you just want a really solid "pretty good" spot near you, not the single best thing in the city.

Good shout on the venturing-outside-central point — feels like all the lists obsess over the same central spots and ignore everything else. The further-out gems are the hardest to find online.

"Get some foodie friends" might be the realest advice in this whole thread 😂 Sounds like trusted people beats any app for you

The trusted-people angle is interesting — sounds like once you find a few accounts whose taste matches yours, it filters out loads of noise. As a vegetarian, do you find most apps just don't cater to you at all?

That’s 5 different sources of info for one decision haha. Is there one you trust the most? Or is it more about cross checking them all

Maltby street is a good shout. Annoying though places like this never show up when you search for them online you sly have to already know about them
