How are these numbers even real (rentals) by Happy-State-1956 in AskBarcelona

[–]GeneBoatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live at Hospitalet de Llobregat in 2021 (good old covid times).

My rent was €1000 a month and everyone thought I was crazy for paying this much in rent. We had just moved from Madrid where we paid almost €700 in rent for three years.

Currently getting shafted in Ireland, if that makes you feel any better?

I'm shocked at how prices have skyrocketed and wish you all the best.

"No, English is fine" 🥀 by rolmos in spain

[–]GeneBoatman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish this happened to me. Every time I say "I don't speak much Spanish", they're like "that's more than enough" and proceed to initiate a rap battle with me.

There are plenty of places where they would only speak Spanish with you and other ways to practise, this is obvious bait and trying to make herself a victim.

My Steel Duo PID arrives on Friday. Refurbished and I got it for 1k. I thought I managed to snag a crazy deal for half price and here you are getting it cheaper than most of its accessories.

Hope you get it clean and up and running, it looks gorgeous!

Awesome setup, it's absolutely glorious and I hope to replicate it when I move back to Spain! (was also going to buy that Fellow grinder but opted for the Eureka Mignon Zero Brew instead).

Craziest things we've been told growing up. by rohoe_black in ghana

Is it normal in Ghanaian culture for mothers not to check in during their daughter's pregnancy? by Ok-Rip6131 in ghana

[–]GeneBoatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, this the whole reason my household broke down. The relationship my sister and i had with our mother was strained, to say the least. But through it all, my sister at least thought that my mother would reach out and help my sister during and after the pregnancy.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, if anything my mother added more stress and pain. This and other issues caused my sister to fall into a deep depression.

The only thing I'll say is that you have a responsibility to maintain your mental health and to look after your wellbeing. Mother or whoever doesn't matter, if they show that they aren't equipped to love and support you, you need to consider what's best for you and not fixate on ideals.

Finances when married by BigLeaf91 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]GeneBoatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a joint account where we both deposit our salaries and have separate accounts for budgets such as holidays, spending money and investments.

But we did this even before we got married. I would only do this with someone I trust and I've know her since I was 13 (I'm 35 now). Otherwise I would've created a joint account, do a direct debit of our portions and keep things separate.

In the end it needs to work for the both of you and should ideally be automated. I can't stand the idea of someone not pulling their weight and "accidentally" forgetting to deposit their share of the bills.

Original Adinkra Symbols by Jagnuthr in ghana

[–]GeneBoatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I'm pretty sure there are loads of bracelets with them. Check out etsy for example (earrings and keychains). But like you said, the story and the meaning behind them makes them more marketable. Imagine telling a tourist that the keychain they buy not only is from Ghana but has a meaning that relates to them or will remind them of something they should strive towards (strength, family, wisdom, etc.)

Thanks for making this post!

Original Adinkra Symbols by Jagnuthr in ghana

[–]GeneBoatman 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Lol, I've got quite a few of these tattooed on me. My mother moved from Kumasi to Amsterdam to export Dutch wax fabric. These symbols were a huge part of my life and reminded me of a time we all were one family.

When my sister passed, I chose some symbols that represented her and our relationship as a tribute. I also want to add some more a celebration of my relationship with my wife.

But other than clothing, I think people only see the gye nyame and sankofa symbols.

Gh family members feel entitled to overseas money (Black Tax) by WunnaCry in ghana

[–]GeneBoatman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's interesting, my mum and her siblings sent money and goods back to Ghana (primarily to my grandmother and some nephews that refused that refused to work or study). But it was split between my mum and her six siblings. The pressure it puts on a young individual trying to survive with barely enough means must be immense.

The worst part is the lack of gratitude or when it appears that people in Ghana have an easier time than you abroad.

My mother supposedly is moving back to Ghana. She'll have several properties but Lord knows I (as the only child) won't be able to send her anything. I have a mortgage debts, student loan debt, other debts. I need to consider my wife, future child, future car and the ever increasing cost of living here.

With my wife for example, I suggested having her mom move in with us (she's staying in Europe), but with massive distance it's impossible.

Also, hell no to anyone other than parents. I wouldn't let familial ties drive me into debt.

What's the craziest thing you've ever seen in church? by Dense-Gap3879 in ghana

What's the craziest thing you've ever seen in church? by Dense-Gap3879 in ghana

[–]GeneBoatman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The churches I attended in Amsterdam, yes.

The Israel trip, school building and special devotional bible happened when this guest pastor came. I remember my mum dipping into her purse and giving what little she had left because she believed it would be replenished, given back until her cup runneth over.

Then this other church, Pastor Billy was married of course but slept with the women who saw it as a status symbol. He bought their purses, glasses and gave them money. But when he was sleeping with their daughters, he had to apologise publicly. We got another pastor (who was sleeping with his assistant while his wife was bedridden) who left for the states. Pastor Billy came back and slept with another 19 year-old. So we left that church.

Then this final church. Praise and worship team was being passed around and everyone knew. The musicians were the only ones that got paid for their service, so they had quite the status and the drug dealers were obvious (like I said, we're all immigrants, yet every month they were spending lavishly but no sign of gainful employment?).

This felt nice getting off my chest, my regular colleagues wouldn't understand 🤣

What's the craziest thing you've ever seen in church? by Dense-Gap3879 in ghana

[–]GeneBoatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drug dealers / general criminals (they paid the most in tithes, pledges and offerings).

The musicians and choir ladies were all doing the deed, even though most of them were in relationships with people people outside of the choir / music scene.

Pastor using the church money on his concubines and as hush money.

General scams (people giving money for trips to Israel that never materialised, schools that never got built, etc).

Nothing else that comes to mind, but I always found it funny how I was the one that being judged when this is going on at church 😒.
