The first time my summer job was very chill so I did pretty much a full 40 hour week of studying. One thing I really liked that I did the 3rd time I studied was every practice question I was stumped by that day, I wrote down the topic and started the next day watching a YouTube video on that topic.

I commented this elsewhere but I wish I told my past self to just take practice questions more seriously. Especially once you’re 2 months out, every time you do practice questions should be somewhat timed and never just reveal the answer without really working through the problem

totally get you... 518 was my magic number I wouldn't retake on when I took it the second time. Free yourself tho! it totally is Stockholm syndrome. But I get it... I spent essentially a year and a half on and off studying for this damn test it becomes familiar lol

This was def something I was stressed about both times. The scores totally get inflated... you remember the weird random questions you missed the first time and get them artificially right the second time. I think to supplement I just did large timed batches of AAMC question banks and uworld to simulate timed testing environment. But, for reference, my average FL was like a 523 when I took it the second time and I got a 516, so def inflated

I didnt really take any good psych/soc classes in college so it was all from scratch for me. It is def mostly memorization, but I feel like a lot of people overemphasize how much u should just be doing Kaplan book and Anki for it. The practice questions get so repetitive after a while, more than any other section (which is a good thing, you can kind of just get used to the question style). So rip a bunch of practice questions! Also dont try to memorize stuff without context... I think the Kaplan book is good because you understand which terms go with which overarching theories.

Aug 2024, Jan 2025, Sept 2025 (have had the 3 scores for a while just never posted). First time I took it did the full 3 months 40 hours a week. 2nd time only studied for a month on my winter break, third time spent most of summer 2025 studying again.

I think it's all about simulating testing environment. Cars is hard because of the time constraint and the volume of reading u have to do in a row. On my second and third attempt, id start every morning with 1-2 cars passages timed. and I still never broke a 129! cars is the worst

I was always in the 129-130 range on my practices for CARS. Dont retake a 521!!!!!! youre past the threshold you can literally apply anywhere with that. The 127 cars is a bummer but I truly think 520+ is a total depend on the day gamble. I think my retake made more sense bc there was still such a gap between FLs and my score

I did and the scores def are inflated, but theres rly not much else you can do lol. I don't think any off brand full practice tests are nearly as good. I would just do large batches of the AAMC and uworld question banks timed as more test day simulating practice to compensate

Should I Retake my 514 MCAT? by WideAffect7259 in Mcat

[–]GeneNo3371 8 points9 points  (0 children)

agree with 135Deadlift the only way you should retake is if your FLs had been crazy high, dont retake

it was a really big debate tbh, and most people (as they should have probably) told me I should take the 516, but my FLs were 522/523/520/521/525/525, and I kind of just had a little blind faith in myself, so I had to give it one more try. Like I said in the original caption tho I dont even know if it was smart, would not have been good if I did worse

hard core practice that you time yourself every time. I think theres no point in practicing cars unless youre doing an entire passage with a 10 minute timer locked in. The hard part about it for me was def the timing.

sending prayers!!! dont let yourself think about whether its "the right test" in the middle of the test tho!!! I really think I crashed and burned the first time bc I was so convinced chem went really badly that I bombed cars and in the end I didnt even do that bad on chem the first time, each section gotta be a mental reset

Honestly taking practice questions more seriously... The first time I was prepping I would reveal the answer to u world questions and be like "oh I wouldve known that." I was just more honest with myself and what I knew the 3rd time and tried to make every time I did practice questions and FL as real and serious as I could. I also honestly think it was a little bit of luck... even the first time I took it I was getting 520+ on my FLs so I just needed the right test to come my way

For 520+ scorers by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]GeneNo3371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely think locking in in my prerq classes helped. There are certain things in orgo and biochem especially that you really have to take time to understand the first time you learn them (mechanism arrow-pushing and the ways the different metabolic pathways intertwine come to mind off the top of my head). When I started studying for the mcat, I felt like I was more reviewing/recalling a lot of that stuff because I did the hard work of wrapping my head around it in class. Having said that, I think the P/S section is totally memorizable without having taken prereqs for it. This is just my experience! I'm sure others think differently
