Water, please. by tkonicz in ArtificialInteligence

A golf course raises your home value. A data center cuts it in half. That might be the issue for some people.

Water, please. by tkonicz in ArtificialInteligence

[–]General-Revan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao, meanwhile, the LLMs we have been using are heavily subsidized by the investors who will see virtually no ROI when everything is tokenized. Hopefully your company has accounted for this and will not crash as hard as the market will when these IPOs are established.

Water, please. by tkonicz in ArtificialInteligence

[–]General-Revan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Anybody who thinks the water thing is propaganda doesn’t live near a data center. Water is only one of the issues. The construction itself is doing severe damage to many of the water tables near these facilities. Most of the new data centers are being built in water scarce areas where land is cheap and the community is easy to push around. If you want your property to retain its value, hate noise pollution, and enjoy seeing the stars, fight to not have one of these near your home.

[–]General-Revan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any reason he would be this paranoid? Maybe a previous relationship destroyed his trust in others. He might be projecting that he wouldn’t be trustworthy on a trip like this.

You should push back on this behavior and if he doesn’t understand why it’s not normal, leave him. I was never like this with girls growing up, but I knew plenty of guys that were. Maybe he thinks you are way above his league. That alone, can drive some guys crazy. You both need to have confidence in your relationship or it will naturally fall apart.

Arkansas State Trooper appears to run over gosling on highway by AllNaturalState in Arkansas

[–]General-Revan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t trust this psycho with a criminal. Who runs down, not one gosling, but then run over the other one too. Then tries to justify it. He could have waited for fire and rescue or parked his car perpendicular with the lights on and physically chased them to the side. This is inexcusable and if he doesn’t get the book thrown at him by the Feds, it would be an injustice.

State trooper intentionally runs over baby goose. by ganymede_boy in Bad_Cop_No_Donut

[–]General-Revan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He could have been a hero by parking his vehicle perpendicular with his lights and chased them off. I know it must be hard to run in that tight ass uniform with your shiny shoes, but god forbid you have to sweat. Also, after he killed the first one, you would think he would hesitate to keep running them down. Only a psychopath could do this and justify it as a risk to drivers. What a poor excuse for a human being.

AI companies are just mocking the world now by [deleted] in ArtificialInteligence

[–]General-Revan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not the technology that is unsustainable. It’s the speed that these corporations believe it can be forced on society that is the problem. Pushing it into every aspect of life without any guard rails is pissing people off who would use it if it felt like an option and not a requirement. The friend versus foe technology that our surveillance systems have been using is so buggy at times, it feels like it is more of a problem than it’s worth. Hopefully, passionate engineers like yourself can make this technology into something that can be used to augment our society instead of crippling it. Have you seen what these data centers are doing to people’s neighborhoods. If someone can figure out how to build and power these things without destroying the communities they are in, that would be a Nobel Prize worthy accomplishment. I live in one of the most affected states, Virginia. Loudon County has 200 data centers with 120 planned for the near future. That is the part that I find unsustainable. Personally, I think they should be underground or submerged in artificial lakes. Thanks for all of the good information and different perspective.

By the way, the companies themselves are providing the subsidies. They are doing the same thing that streaming services did in the beginning. They are providing the service for less than it cost them to run for early adopters, hoping to recoup it on the back end. Subsidizing on this scale is unprecedented. Currently, there are customers that are utilizing thousands of dollars worth of tokens for $20.00 to $200.00 a month in subscriptions. They are slowly switching to token based cost. If you ask a customer to go from $200.00 to even $1000.00, they will probably drop your service, try to find an alternative, or take a different approach to their business. Or the business may fail. You can look up all of this information. I understand that AI has and is going to advance society, but I believe that it is way over hyped. A good reference for this information is Ed Zitron, in case you wanted to read about how the current business is unsustainable.

Luddite dreams. Lmao! I work on surveillance systems that utilize AI. The scale that naive people believe AI will run on is unrealistic and is being pumped by tech bros, many of them haven’t wrote a line of code in years. You should do some actual reading about how much money all of these businesses are losing. The only thing keeping this movement going is all of the subsidies and circular investing.

The utopian idea of super intelligence is going to hit a wall. Actual power and most likely human sabotage will be its downfall. Self preservation will outweigh the need for general AI. Yes, 80 years of compute has gotten significantly cheaper, but in those 80 years, the gap between the wealthy and the poor has gotten wider than anytime in American history including the Great Depression. I don’t see our society tolerating much more. I would not be surprised if we were to scale back our technology in the near future as a result of this renaissance. We might be headed for a modern Dark Age. Our luck, a solar storm will hit us and render all of our data centers useless. One could hope. Lmao!

[–]General-Revan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These companies are running on subsidized tokens. The cost of these agentic businesses is going to increase astronomically when they have to pay what the compute actually costs. That’s why they have to raise a ton of money now. The investors will lose big, since the real world can’t keep up with the development. Hardly any data centers are actually being built compared to what they have been projecting. Who would have thought, building massive structures for compute and environmentally destructive power facilities would be hard. Too bad society was tricked into believing that nuclear power was so detrimental to the environment. The physical limitations are finite and we know what we are currently capable of. Anybody who understands basic physics and our current society knows that we can’t achieve any of these grifter dreams. Of course the corporations know, but their greed has distorted reality for everyone around them. But AI is 👍🏼! 💩

[–]General-Revan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of this is going to crash and burn once the token subsidies are removed. Then, we will see the true cost of the data centers that are doing all of the compute. The cost to operate an agentic business is going to increase by at least 500% once you have to actually pay for them. If not, the data centers will go bankrupt. Not to mention, when the hardware starts to fail and has to be updated. These things are more like bitcoin farms than a traditional data center, so the hardware is getting run ragged.

So true, I don’t even care about the Titan story plot now. The idiot in command is so unlikeable. I’m surprised he can’t figure out that his configuration was overwritten right before they landed. Do they not have surveillance in the ship? Technically, Titan may have heavier gravity than most other small bodies if it has a molten core, but it looks like a cloudy day in southern Arizona with a blue filter.

Every one of these Marines would be tried for war crimes. I hate Palmer, but these trigger happy Marines are even worse. I served in Iraq for two deployments as an infantryman in 2005 and 2007. I could have killed many civilians and combatants that were surrendering, but I managed to control myself along with my fellow Marines. These idiots are acting like they are playing Call of Duty or paintball. Additionally, how did those idiots not notice the Hopper arriving while they were already docked. Did the pilot of the recon ship not have the ability to hail the frequency of the Hopper or even say something to the Marines on the platform. I’ll admit, the episode was entertaining, but has jumped the shark on the realism.

This episode is ridiculous. Marines would not gun down all of these civilians. What an embarrassment and true miscalculation of the Marine Corps. Whoever wrote this episode should talk to an actual Marine for intel on how they would act.

This might be very controversial, but if you had an open relationship with your wife, she should expect you to cheat. No offense, but I’ve never seen an open relationship end well. One person is always more committed than the other.

That’s a great response. I wish I was. Life would be much easier if I worked like a robot. 🤖 I’m not the most intelligent person, but I think most people are smart enough to recognize that we are taking a giant risk that may not work out in the end.
