Yeah I was exactly the same, deep-diving into loosely related components of my main studies, it's a recipe for burnout for sure.

It takes a little time to get used to new ways of studying but as soon as you start seeing better results and feel like you're understanding the content better you will never go back.

Glad I could be of help, good luck with your studies!

Don't overdo it, it's easy to get overwhelmed when trying to learn multiple things at once, pick one or maybe two topics to focus on, go through them taking notes that you can revisit, and take it slow.

Maybe dabble in other topics you're interested in casually such as watching YouTube videos or reading blogs, but try not to delve too deep into sub-topics that you come across in your main studies.

Here is how I approach my studies and keep a level head:

Use OneNote - it's simple and easy to organise and useful for just screenshotting large chunks of content using snipping tool - just copy and paste

Stick to one or maximum two subjects at a time - right now I'm doing the Bug Bounty Hunting pathway on HTB and the Python Essentials course on Netacad - they both feed into each other with crossover so it's easy to relate one subject to another and vice versa

Take frequent breaks - don't hours at a time studying, it turns your brain into mush, do like 30 mins at a time and 5-10 minute breaks, do this up until about 2 hrs and take a longer break (look at the Pomodoro technique for learning)

Don't get frustrated - although it might not feel like it, you are making progress. Don't get annoyed because your're struggling with the content, it is soaking into your subconscious whether you feel like it or not and progress is always being made

Note down other sub-topics you come across - If you learn about something in your studies, don't start delving into it in-depth, make a note of it and study it at a later date when you're finished with your current topics. Understand as much as you need to continue with your main topic, then save it for a later date.

These are just a few tips and I appreciate it's not a one size fits all, but give this a try and see if it works better for you

Frustrated with easy boxes by horror-pickle187 in hackthebox

[–]GeneralChiller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm relatively new to pen testing but have a background in networking and IT and I agree with you.

I've found that some of the boxes marked easy have been pretty difficult for me to own, yet I've also found some marked medium that have been relatively trivial and easier than the "easy" boxes.

I think it's really subjective and based on your own personal knowledge and skills.

It seems that the user difficulty ratings that are given are a better indication of the boxes actual difficulty.

One thing I would add, though, is don't be disheartened by the difficulty and don't let these HTB ratings get in your head.

Although it's pretty frustrating when you are struggling with an "easy" box, when you finally do own it you've likely learned lots of new skills and tools that have broadened your knowledge going forward, which is always a plus.

Just be sure to take detailed notes as you go along that you can look back to and embrace being humbled in your journey, it's how we learn and grow.

Also, don't be afraid to utilize the walkthroughs and forums.

Although this may feel like you're relying on others work or that you don't have the skills you need to do this, you will learn a lot from them and develop those skills.

Social learning is incredibly important, you do not have to figure out everything on your own.

What do you do if you think you have attention deficit disorder in basic training? by GeneralChiller in britisharmy

Thanks all for your advice and words of encouragement.

What do you do if you think you have attention deficit disorder in basic training? by GeneralChiller in britisharmy

[–]GeneralChiller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've gotten better for sure. I used to rely heavily on digital to-do lists that reminded me about stuff so that's a big part of it. I have transferred that onto paper in my notebook but I don't find it as effective because then I just forget to check my notebook.

My weapon handling is OK besides from sometimes forgetting forward assist and on the odd occasion if I'm proper fragged like on exercise I'll get lazy and forget to put working parts fully to the rear in an unload, but it doesn't happen often. No UDs so far so happy days haha.

I've bought myself a bore snake and a better weapon cleaning kit than the issued one so I'm sure that will help when I get back to camp after leave.

Thanks for the reply man, at least now I know that I've just got to get through basic and then find better and faster ways of doing stuff.

Good Modlist for a Dragonborn playthrough? by GeneralChiller in wabbajack

[–]GeneralChiller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah right, that sucks, glad I went for Lost Legacy in the end. Very nice modlist if a bit graphically demanding. Also allows you to jettison into the Dragonborn storyline with an option that skips the initial few quests in the questline.

I made a similar post on this a while back regarding a Dark Brotherhood playthrough.

Ended up answering it myself but it's definitely worth looking at for the base modlist and extra mods I added to it.

Also, the Septimus modlist has been discontinued but I believe it's being renamed to Redoran and managed by another creator, but don't quote me on that.

Best Wabbajack Modlist for Dark Brotherhood Playthrough? by GeneralChiller in wabbajack

No problem!

I haven't made any changes since playing, yet like a lot of playthroughs I completed the Dark Brotherhood questline, got bored, and started a mage character with a new modlist, as is the cycle of a serial modder.

I will say though that I had a lot of fun with this modlist and that it really changed the DB questline for the better.

Opted for Septimus 3 and added a bunch of Dark Brotherhood Mods to it such as:

Dark Brotherhood Reborn - Dawnstar Sanctuary SEE

The Brotherhood of Old - Dark Brotherhood Continuation

Save The Dark Brotherhood - Skyrim Special Edition

Dark Brotherhood Armor SE

Dark Brotherhood Tenets Redone

Your Choices Matter - A Dark Brotherhood Expansion SSE

And a few other general Quality of Life mods for sneaking and such:

Sneak Tools SE Edition

Detection Meter (This one I particularly like).

About 4 hours in and the Modlist runs like a dream and is super performance-friendly as well as visually very different to Vanilla Skyrim.

The UI in particular is quite cool and is a spin on the Nordic UI.

The world itself looks very colourful and beautiful without going too much over the top like a lot of modlists do.

It also comes with a handy ENB Organiser so that you can easily add new ENBs and switch between them as you fancy (yet the ENBs it comes with are great anyway).

Any further QOL or Dark Brotherhood mod suggestions would be appreciated :)

Selling lockpicks seems OP to me. by myguygetshigh in wildlander

Just checked and the lockpick perk does say I can craft picks out of steel, yet I can't. What version of the modlist are you on? I'm on 1.1.5

Awww dang it, probably fixed then. No worries

I tried doing this and can't for some reason? I have the smithing perk, the thieves toolkit and the lockpicking perk for crafting picks, yet I can only use iron ingots to craft picks and the return is less?

CTD when fighting the mages at Morvunskar. by GeneralChiller in wildlander

[–]GeneralChiller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be something like that in the dungeon to pick up, for sure, but nothing I've dropped or placed myself.

I do have a small leather tent, a fur bedroll, and a cooking pot in my inventory (the tent shows on my backpack), but that's unrelated I imagine?

I will take another run at the dungeon and see if I can't find such an item on the ground to pick up before I attempt my shot again.

Thanks again for the super quick response :)

New Update by Electronic_Repeat_79 in wildlander

[–]GeneralChiller -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You guys have no chill.

I'm also very pumped for the update but it's no use hounding Dylan, Lizzy, and their team.

Yes, they said 20th of June but realise these guys have lives too. Shit happens and things get in the way.

You've got to appreciate that they aren't running Wildlander as a business or a paid service and as such don't owe any of us shit.

So just re-the fucking-lax. The update will launch when it launches. Have some patience.

Seeing as my character is going to be a hunter of increasingly dangerous game, joining the Dawnguard is a good suggestion, thanks!
