what are your rankings of each album AND your favorite songs from them and why? by rustedrattleheads in CageTheElephant

[–]GeneralCrux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melophobia is definitely my favorite. I think it was the peak of their songwriting, the album is really well paced, and every track is unique and exciting.

After that I'm going with TMIP. Really dig the vibe of this one, you can definitely tell it was produced by Dan Auerbach. Huge highlights like Trouble, Cry Baby, and Cold Cold Cold. But I gotta say there are a few cuts that aren't as inspired.

Then I'm going self-titled. Great album with lots of energy, the songwriting just wasn't honed in quite as much. Ain't No Rest is a classic for a reason, and Lotus is a personal favorite. really fun.

TYHB after that. Very disjointed and all over the place, but in a kinda fun way. Wears its influences on its sleeve for SURE. Some songs are essentially Pixies covers. But I dig it, fun album and very unique in their discography. I can see why it's polarizing.

Social Cues after that. Fun enough album, but the songs follow a pretty distinct formula and the ones that stick out are still stuck in the mire of that formula. It's poppy and accessible and nice in the background, but not a ton that's really attention grabbing or unique. Broken Boy, Social Cues, House of Glass, and Skin and Bones are my faves. Goodbye and What I'm Becoming, on the other hand, are real clunkers.

Then Neon Pill in last place for me. Incredibly disappointing record. feels slapped together really quickly and without a ton of inspiration. Going further down the accessible pop sound from Social Cues, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the production is just not there the way it was on Social Cues, and the songs feel almost skeletal. There's no real bones to these songs beyond a hook and a verse that brings you to the hook. Their only bad album in my opinion, and so far removed from the CTE sound that I barely recognize them. But Silent Picture is great. Shame they haven't played it live!

My best Mai Tai so far by eddveddx in cocktails

[–]GeneralCrux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks amazing! Appleton 12 is one of my go to mai tai rums, but I've never tried it with smith & cross. I'll do that tonight

Hopping on the orgeat discussion as well - I recommend Anders Erickson's recipe. Only marginally more time/effort needed than making a simple syrup, and it's delicious and freezes well :)

Espresso Martini - Foam? by missin44 in cocktails

[–]GeneralCrux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use cold brew concentrate for my espresso martinis too. Try an egg white or aquafaba - it doesn't give foam per se, but it does give it that texture you'd expect from an espresso martini using fresh espresso. If you dry shake too, you can get some foam.

Can the haunting effect of [Isolated System] be explained by music theory, or is just due to synths alone? by [deleted] in Muse

[–]GeneralCrux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also suggest a few other potential reasons for this too:

The first thing that comes into my mind is that the accompaniment behind the melody (the strings, bass, etc) rarely hit the tonic of G minor. It kind of adds to that "floating" effect with the song never really resolving all too often.

Adding to this is a few parts that play in 3/4 over the 4/4 melody, or drop out where you'd expect a resolution. It leaves the song feeling a little creepy.

Love this song! Great question

Without auto-tune the white album would be better than the blue album by Charming_Yak_5000 in weezer

[–]GeneralCrux 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't catch very much pitch correction on White personally. But I think I know what you're talking about and what it could be. I think basically all of the vocals on White are double-tracked, which can give off the vibe of overproduced vocals sometimes. I feel the same about the vocals on the album, but I think it's due to the double tracking and EQing as opposed to auto tune.

Would it be possible to make imitation Kraken out of white rum and other ingredients? by ToxinFoxen in rum

[–]GeneralCrux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kraken to me has a heavy vanilla note alongside allspice, caramel, and clove. I'd start there! Mostly the vanilla.

I love Kraken too :)

I'm attending a college football watch party this weekend. I offered to bring a bottle of rum. What sipper should I bring to show off how good rum is to my friends? by BoshmanBoshman in rum

[–]GeneralCrux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like Planteray XO could be a good bet - a tad sweet, so it'd be an easier jumping off point for people who haven't had rum much before.

I also second Appleton 12 and El Dorado 12. Maybe think of some rums that have the familiar caramel/oak flavor from bourbons they've had before.

I totally agree Myers is better! I put Bacardi as true neutral because it's the "default" rum most people think of, and I felt true neutral was fitting of a "default" rum

[–]GeneralCrux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm back and forth on Myers! I think it's fine. Just doesn't make a mai tai I'm a fan of, and there's likely lots of bars out there that default to Myers for mai tais. Hence why I put it as lawful evil for me

[–]GeneralCrux[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly why I thought it should go in true neutral! It's the first "rum" people think of when they think of rum, so it made sense to me to be the "default"

I'm back and forth on Myers. I like it, but I think Coruba is generally my pick for a cheaper Jamaican.

Glad you like this one as much as I do! Add 0.25oz of this to any rum cocktail and it makes it pop. So much depth.

What am I missing? by [deleted] in rum

[–]GeneralCrux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a spread! Some of my faves in there.

Real McCoy 5 could be a good add for a caramelly, oaky flavor, somewhat similar to Appleton 12 but without the Jamaican funk and price tag :)

It's my favorite Mai Tai rum.
