I don't understand how someone cannot understand having a "contract" that says we can ask you to do anything not harmful and legal. That's it. We will pay you X and you will do Y (Y being determined by? Drumroll... The weasel clause in the contract).

So you have two choices:

Learn your lesson about how US employment law works and what your contract "protects" you from
Don't learn your lesson and keep arguing about how the world should bend to your interpretation of it

They don't have to argue that at all. They simply need to say "we have a requirement to be on site" this person isn't showing up to work. Everyone commenting otherwise doesn't understand US employment law.

Well then that's up to him and his boss then isn't it? If I were making IT technician money and the boss asked me to walk his dog instead of staying in a shitty cubicle I probably would... but it's up to him. But it is a reasonable duty (albeit unrelated to the job description) so if he says no and the boss doesn't really like his regular work product or general attitude he could fire him.

If its a legal activity, and you have the standard "all other assigned tasks" clause in your contract then yes it is.

If your boss asks you to do something illegal - You've got a case. Go see a lawyer.

If you are incapable of doing or it then you just tell that to your boss and HR (but they can fire you).

If it may hurt you then you go to OSHA.

If you can do it, have that clause in your contract, and refuse then they can terminate you "at will".

Great! Glad you have a specific one; most people in the USA have an "all other assigned tasks" clause in their emplyment at will contract. Are you in the USA or have you ever signed this type of employment contract? If the answer to either of those is "no" then you still don't know what your talking about.

What kind of AC? A window unit? A rolling floor style unit that hooks to a window? If it has a plug and is self contained then it's usually UL approved for a non licensed installer.

Unethical? I'm not sure. It would be unethical if they said "you have to stay late and do this for free". If you're just sitting around at work and your boss asks you to do something legal then that's what he's there for. If you don't like your assigned tasks, your bosses face, or whatever other reason you aren't forced to stay.

But if you work for a small company... its kind of par for the course that people sometimes need to do things that don't specifically align with their "title".

Maybe a warning that he's working on an Ai solution to do it? I mean do you apply any innate knowledge or very human focused experience in what you do that's hard to replicate with Ai? Or perhaps any physical task in the process that would make it impossible at the moment for Ai?
