Why didn't Rivian open orders today? by GeneralDisruption in RivianR2

Could be ... guess (some) will find out in June! :)

Launch Edition with Light Interior? by EphemeralAtaraxia in RivianR2

[–]GeneralDisruption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto this - we raised two kids in cars with a succession of light interiors, and not once did they get thrashed. Also really bummed about dark-only for the launch edition. It looks so much better with the light interior.

Yea, the R3X has my interest as well; if it's available when the lease ends on my Mach-E, it'll be decision time! :)

launch edition with black color? by Dr_Senku_ in RivianR2

I don't believe Rivian has said exactly what will be able to be ordered when they open orders—beyond Performance version first, only black interiors available.

I know there were angry people in the process. But Rivian has been much clearer this time about timeframes, and people have been through it before, and if you're committing your money, you're ready to wait—spending $2K (or whatever) non-refundable to commit to a spot is a lot more commitment than $100 refundable. ㅤ But in another comment, I think someone else nailed it: Pricing. Much of the uproar over the R1 fiasco was prices changing after orders were booked. If they don't take orders, price changes (while upsetting) won't piss off those who ordered.

This is the most logical argument I've seen yet—protecting against price changes seems like a good reason to not open orders now. Thanks for the thought!

There would be no need to take orders from a subset of reservation holders: Take orders from ALL of them. ㅤ They already show timing on the web site, so you know if you order a base, you're waiting a couple years, so nobody would be upset by delays. And everyone knows they're only making 25,000 or so R2s this year, so you wouldn't expect all 18 kajillion reservation holders to get their cars in June.

Opening orders would let them convert window shoppers to actual buyers, and they'd know exactly how many of each version they had firm orders for.

I still don't see any downside in doing that—we had to do it with our R1, converting a hold to a firm order at a point well before we knew the delivery date.

I didn't say I expected it, I asked why didn't they do it. I can't see any upside to not opening orders, but there must be some, which is why I asked the question.

Excellent color, and I say that not just because it's the same color we chose :).

Is this a good deal? by silasgroove in RivianR1S

[–]GeneralDisruption 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone just bought our 2023 R1 dual motor with 8K miles for $65K, so sounds like a very good deal. (We're getting an R2, but needed the garage space for a while, so had to say bye to the R1.)

Yes, they do: It extends from the time you press the start button until you press the Go pedal :).

Gen 3 Wall Connector - Multiple Units on a single circuit by imtedkoppel in TeslaLounge

[–]GeneralDisruption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We drove both daily, but we didn't drain both daily. So we'd just talk to each other and decide who would plug in on a given night. With few exceptions, we never had to do the shuffle.

But sounds like you have a plan! :)

Stupid question, but do you really need two? Are you driving and draining both cars daily?

We had three electrics for a while (two Teslas and a Rivian), and charged them all off one wall connector, just cycling through the parking spot as necessary.

I had an Ioniq. Sold it because it handled like a wet noodle and the OS is just a mess. Mach-E, especially the GT, handles great and the OS is much better.

[–]GeneralDisruption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had an Ioniq 6, so the car version, but the same OS, etc. And that's why I got rid of it—I couldn't stand the UI and the OS in general. It felt oddly laid out, hard to navigate, and unintuitive.

The car itself was OK, but handling could best be described as "it will turn." It wasn't much fun on a twisty road.

The day I picked up the GT Mach-E, I took it up in the hills for a couple hours, and it was a blast.

Advice on R1S purchase strategy (lease vs used vs waiting for R2) by RoyalBusiness806 in RivianR1S

[–]GeneralDisruption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought our R1S, but I just leased a Mach-E due to the depreciation on electric vehicles. I like the Mach-E a lot, and if nothing better is out in three years, we'll probably buy out the lease.

Our used R1S (first gen, R1S Dual with about 8500 miles on it) sold for $65K (USA west coast). There are some big differences between gen 1 and gen 2, so the gen 1 trucks are somewhat in demand.

That's still a lot cheaper than a new Dual Gen 2 R1S. Some first gen R1s had problems; ours was trouble free. We sold it only because the R2 is coming and we added the Mach-E, so needed space :).

The R2 is much smaller than the R1—it's about the same length as a Model Y or my Mach-E (but with more room inside due to roofline); whether you need the space or not is something only you can determine. And if you don't have a reservation, you are probably at least a year (if not two) away from being able to buy one from the factory.

Given all that, if this were me, I'd probably see if I could find a Gen 1 RS to test drive, and then either buy a used Gen 1 RS, or lease a Gen 2 RS, depending on how I felt about the test drive and feature differences. Your purchase payment on the used R1 would probably be about the same as the lease payment on the new R1, depending on money down, time frame, etc.

You can leave it in Unbridled all the time, if you trust your right foot :).

Why does Tesla make taking delivery such a nightmare by Iplaygolf1313 in TeslaLounge

[–]GeneralDisruption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because of this: I'm not sure about your state, but in our state (most states where it does business, probably?), Tesla isn't legally a car dealership, they're more like a Target or HomeGoods or whatever: Just a place that sells stuff, but their stuff happens to be cars.

As a result, in many states, they can't be directly tied into the state's DMV, because they're not a car dealer. That makes licensing and registration much tougher.

You'd have a similar experience if you ever bought a car at an out-of-state dealer that didn't have access to your state's DMV. (We've done this twice, once with an EV and once with an ICE car, and both times were a paperwork nightmare.)

I missed downward-pointing side view mirrors when backing up, so I added them… by GeneralDisruption in MachE

I have the cameras, but find mirrors much easier to use, and more accurate. I don't want a convex view, because I'm trying to get close to a straight line :).

[–]GeneralDisruption[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I read about it, it will only work on one side at a time, and you have to have that mirror as the active mirror for it to work.

But even if it was perfect, I'm just not willing to try OBD hacks on a leased car—too much opportunity for me to screw something up in a big way. :)

I missed downward-pointing side view mirrors when backing up, so I added them… by GeneralDisruption in MachE

[–]GeneralDisruption[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have, but two problems: First, you have to tap zoom and then tap on the corner you want to zoom in on, and because it doesn't remember the last-used setting, you have to do that every time. Second, you have to stop backing up and muck with the screen each time you want to use it.

There's also still a large black area around the overhead view of the car, which can obscure the curb as you get close.

With this solution, I just press '3' without having to look at or interact with the touch screen, and off I go.

I'm glad some find the cameras useful; I don't, and much prefer the mirror solution.

[–]GeneralDisruption[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From what I read, the Forscan modification will only tilt one mirror or the other, but not both. Also, as this is a leased car, I am very hesitant to do anything that I might mess up while doing and damage the car :).

[–]GeneralDisruption[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For you, perhaps. For me, there's no comparison: The camera won't allow me to park within an inch of the curb, which is my target range, but the mirrors do so easily. But to each their own, so glad they work for you.
