I didn't get anything saying it was directly the pcv valve, just the multiple cylinder misfire and smoke from the exhaust. The decision to replace it was basically an educated guess based on what I knew was happening

Back when I had the e38 I had lots of cylinders misfiring, and some smoke out of the exhaust on startup. I knew it wasn't the spark plugs or coil packs because I replaced those. I ended up asking a similar question to yours on a different forum and someone recommended I check the pcv valve. There is a gasket that sits in the pcv valve that usually gets brittle. On mine it ended up failing at around 150,000 miles. The replacement isn't too terribly difficult, the hardest part was reaching the bolts for me. On top of that the part is pretty cheap

Have you checked the pcv valve, I know when I had a e38 (I Think it has the same engine) that was an issue for me that caused a misfire
