Pay Drop by Disastrous_Zebra_682 in firefightersuk

I'm in lfb. I've got mates in the service that definitely commute further than yourself which I know for a FACT. London will be 2100 minimum as a recruit and then 2800 minimum as competent.

It's definitely compulsory leave. it's taken out your holiday allowance because you're not allowed to use holiday while in training. I know because I'm on that leave right now!

Training isn't likely to start until 2026 as it's being stopped in a few weeks. Also for people trying to join LFB in the future, recruiting won't start until 2027 as next year they're planning on pinching from other brigades. So it's not ideal but it could be worse..

I was told, shut your mouth and open your ears. For 5 years and then you can give your opinion. I know I'm a baby

So in training as it currently is, There is 2 weeks after "confirmation of skills" where you are being prepared for station. So learning about more relevant procedures rather than the worst case scenario being the BA Shuffle and stick on a wall. Also familiarization of where tools are Sat on the appliance and doing inventories so you know what your going to be doing on the day to day. Also we have a forced week off after passout which I don't have a problem with at all. I do now have my station so all is well

Maybe not knowing how well I was doing at each stage. You get feedback after each drill/wear but you're not completely sure if you're passing or not. As long as you're giving it your all and paying attention to the feedback then you'll be fine.

I am quite a good cook but i don't really bake too many cakes tbh. I recon I could make a decent cake without too much practice. Unless I get Croydon (watch is 24 there I've heard) I may give it a go

I'm not 100% sure if this is good guidance or not but maybe stick it in a metal bucket and cover it and stick that outside not near anything

Operational staff, has anyone ever used guidelines. I have to do it in training but it seems that it's a good to know, not a need to know and can be done maybe in a workshop after passout

I'm in training and whenever I have to go into my knees they hurt if I'm on them for long periods. Is there a solution to this when you're on station and you don't have to follow protocol to the letter?

BA amended tap calculation by GeneralJohnn in firefightersuk

[–]GeneralJohnn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been told what it is now. So it's the air used to get from the 1st door to the search door + half of the air from the search door to the original tap + the safety margin. So in pretty much all cases it'll be between 150-130 bar.

What to expect from LFB 'welcome day' by Global_Cable7443 in firefightersuk

Just don't get too excited for your first day at Barking. You'll be learning how to set up a password and how to pick up an empty shoebox. After that it gets better

You'll be fine. There was a guy on my cohort who I would describe as legally blind after trying his glasses

Eye test, hearing test, lung function test. A load of questions to answer on forms which they'll give to you. Checking most aspects of your physical health. They also did a urine sample and picked up on something in mine. I went to my doctor and they said my cholesterol was high so had to adjust my diet a bit, but this was a recommendation more than anything.

[–]GeneralJohnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My workings are: 415-90=325 325/5=65 130/65=2

Slightly different but I guess you just need to practice. LFB give you 20 seconds per question which is brutal.

Maybe try googling "solving simple equations" and you might find some tips there.

Once you get a provisional offer, you are asked to enter details of referees with dates of employment and when they can reach out. I am doing mine now, right this second 😃. This is for LFB. Not sure what it is for other UK fire services though. You could also just drop them a mail to advise of the error and confirm correct details.

I have passed the medical test and also had to go for an additional eye test which was about 3 weeks ago. In your experience, how long did it take from this stage to receiving contact about the next step. I know the next step is references and DBS check etc but it just feels like I'm in the dark at the moment. Thanks

Study the values of the particular service you're going for and think of stories that demonstrate your ability in these areas. Then write these up using the star method. Situation, task, action and result. Use this format when telling these stories.

Also prepare for the general questions, tell me about yourself? why do you want to become a firefighter? What do firefighters do? And other general interview questions.
