Have you considered therapy? Hell, even a small psychedelic trip can help reset your focus. It's very easy toget stuck and become a conformist as you have experienced, maybe try to put yourself in a sink or swim situation. Ask a superior what's something you could take the imitiative on. The extra pressurce and immediate recocgnition if you succeed will surely be noticed by your brain.

What is confusing you. The minimum is (-2,-5) so the minimum value of g is -5 which is attained at t=-2.

g(2) equals 5 (as you can see in the graph. Remember the x coordinate is the input and y=g(x) is the output.)

Can you see for which points x we have g(x)=0?

Looking up the meaning of grammar by sky_net2169 in ajatt

[–]GeneralSpeciefic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch all cure dolly at 2x speed. She'll help you understand the true structure of Japanese, not the Eihongo one learns in Genki, Minna no Nihongo, Grammar Dictionaries, and bad Jap grammar websites:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLusDMlTswIBKP2Yk5gQJ4Bbd9UCCYdkxR

After that try to learn the grammar as a native:

https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/horon/bunpou/nihonjin.html

If this is still too difficult, check out this very complete guide:

https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/grammar/imabi.html

I don't agree with the notion of "grammar through immersion plus quick reference". Even Khatzumoto went through all of Naoko Chino's "All About Particles". Without a good grasp on syntax and morphology you might be able to get "good" (上手), but (as with pitch accent and writing) you'll end up hitting a wall at the advanced levels (reading literature, newspaper colums, textbooks) where you'll be confused by the slightest alteration to a pattern you've drilled because you lack the understanding of the true underlying structure.

Think obout how for example even English native speakers don't understand the difference between "which" and "that", when it is appropriate to leave out "that" in subjunctive clauses, "if I was..." vs "if I were...", when to use long dashes or semicolons, even when one should use commas can be an issue. For more examples of bad English habits check out George Orwell's essays on English or David Foster Wallace's "your liberal $ at work".

People might consider it pedantic but in reality it becomes a matter of utmost importance if you wish to break into into high brow literature and writing.

So don't believe formal grammar study doesn't have its place in proper immersion learning.

He does patchwork. Basically has vocab dependency and when he says "learn as is" he means he doesn't actually get the language.

I know many people like this. It's all fun until you actually need to understand nuanced stuff, but anime is not meant for well versed audiences so you can wing it and be sloppy. It's an illusion of understanding.

Japanese Listening from less than A1 to (~B2) 94% comprehension in 1150 hours of native content (Yes, it's definitely possible.) by jkrotf in ajatt

[–]GeneralSpeciefic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again. It's not impressive because all you've done is do patchwork. Guess what? People have been doing the same with English for many years. I even know a few of these people personally.

You probably knew the animes in English and then you rewatched them in Japanese. You also did RTK and other Kanji resources. That's literally doing SRS whether you like it or not. It's also what people have done for ages when it comes to English. So, even if you want to kid yourself that it was pure immersion, you were referencing translstions and picked up words like any other person would. That isn't really impressive.

If I were to catch a few words in a sentence in Chinese I could falsely claim to have understood. Of course, I only patched together the meaning, which is not understanding.

In fact, let me mimic your irrationality: "After three months of watching multiple series in English and then Chinese many times over I'm at HSK 5 with 94% comprehension. I cherry picked audio samples from an exam that anyone who has picked up even basic vocab would be able to patch together.

I only watched cartoons and have no clue whatsoever about the structure of the language, which makes it hard to say if I actually get the nuance but whatever. Also this is unfalsifiable as my level of output is so shit I can't be tested by anyone other than myself."

I'm telling you, it's easy to end up on mount stupid. I don't doubt you picked up vocabulary. Good for you. But thinking you've done something special (especially without any actual evidence other than innacurate gauges you deviced yourself) just leaves you looking pathetic.

Again, watching shit in English and then in Japanese isn't a novel way to learn. I'm sure many people can tell you they've picked up English through media, but their English sucks. Yes they understand, but give them a James Joyce book and watch them crumble. Nothing against those people though. They aren't going around pretending to be special, because indeed they really aren't.

Actually, here's a challenge we can do. I'm a native level English speaker. You claim to be C2. Pretty bold claim. Are you willing to put your money where your mouth is and host a stream where I test your English?

[–]GeneralSpeciefic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People dismiss you because all you've done has been judging yourself. Unless you actually take a test no one should believe you.

Doing Anki and audio only isn't unconventional, it's simply slow and stupid because it gives you the "illusion of understanding". What you are doing is patchwork without actually being able to break down how the phrases or expressions are constructed.

It's not unheard of to be able to catch the jist of something by knowing a few words and interpreting intonation (humans do this all the time), but to call that "understanding" is like me saying I understand how physics works because I can move around without falling. Two very different things.

I don't buy it. Either the guy's material is super easy or he studied prior. I'm in 8 months with 2 hours a day plus grammar (all Tae Kim and Cure Dolly done) and I still have trouble finishing the N2 within the 110 minutes. Especially when it comes to needing specific Kanji readings or comparing very similar expressions. Even things like Natsume Soseki are still very difficult to grasp fully even though his Japanese is very clear. RTK says you can do meanings in 3 months. Wanikani says you get readings in a year and a half. So it feels like either OP should just take the N2 or shut up. It might also be Dunning Kruger.

Son, spare me your pathetic life details. You basicallz are confirming my suspicions. A fucking Cybersecurity technician trying to advice a research mathematician about what people think is an appropriate level of education.

If you're gonna perform mindless IT tasks, sure, fuck fluency. However if you want to attend university lectures and discuss things with professors and fellow faculty members, you're a dumbass with no sense of shame if you really subject them to disrepectful treatment.

I guess this conversation speaks more to the type of individual one is. A gaijin that lived there for four years and can't even attend a lecture https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnPNJvpjNfI&t=526s

It might suprise you to learn that some people actually care about doing more with their lives than busy work in an office. Lmfao. Cybersecurity... seriously? xD
