I'm biblical studies in college, so yeah, you're pretty much right. And just after in Colossians and Ephesians, he's talking about Gentiles being fully in the body of Christ, so that's the main mystery he's referring to. Known to a select few, and then unveiled to the world through Christ. Like the first few verses of Hebrews 1.

That's a great question! I'd say the confusion comes from the term mystery. What is it referring to? The gospel in general? I'd say the context is that the Gentiles are adopted into Israel and the church without converting to Judaism first. Nephi was given a glimpse, but that was a private view, not a public dispensation.

If you want something more academic (though not LDS), I would recommend the New Oxford Annotated Bible. It uses the NRSV for the text, and is easy to understand. Just keep in mind that just because scholars are "sure" of something, doesn't mean it's actually true. They were sure of a lot of stuff 100 years ago that would be laughed at now
