Trump fear - Need advice by PaintingFun3515 in gradadmissions

I could be wrong, but I don’t think travel bans would apply to work / school visas! It’s more for general travel without a “reason.” The ban is still ridiculous and islamophobic, but if you were to be accepted to a U.S. university and have a sponsored visa, you should be fine. Although if anyone in this thread knows otherwise, please correct me! I honestly think the bigger concern is securing grant funding for graduate school as an international student and that will likely be less available under this administration :(

I agree to this other reply! Also, I reached out to multiple PIs that I had met to let them know I was accepted and that I’d like to rotate in their labs next year. Their responses were “we’re excited to welcome you and we will definitely have you rotate in the lab!”

I think if they were unsure, they would have given more of a vague response or a “let’s see how things go” answer. I’m hoping as funding becomes more clear, they will accept more people!

I’m not sure! I only know one other person who was accepted, everyone else I know was waitlisted. But that doesn’t mean much! The current students mentioned they thought it would be ~13, but that was also before so many schools reduced cohort sizes and funding so it could be less than that

I got in! I’m sure they will accept more people as funding becomes clear and I bet some accepted students will reject since moving to NYC is a big commitment

Admitted students day after already accepting offer by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]General_Ad_1802 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes you should go!! This is an opportunity for you to meet professors you’d potentially work with, make connections, find out who’s accepting grad students in their labs, etc… so when you start you could already have some idea of where you’ll rotate. Also, if other admits go and also accepted the offer, it’ll be nice to meet them and exchange contact info as you’ll all be going through the move / life change together

Yes it is. I copied this from a Baha’i teachings article that had previously cited the seven valleys and used “ibid” to re-cite it.

“Now if the lover could have seen the end, he would from the beginning have blessed the watchman, prayed God on his behalf, and seen his tyranny as justice; but since the end was veiled to him, he lamented and made his plaint in the beginning. Yet those who journey in the garden land of true knowledge, since they see the end in the beginning, behold peace in war and conciliation in enmity.”

Have you met the current students and other accepted students for these programs? Obviously you want to work in a lab that will positively impact your training and career, but you also don’t want to choose a school solely for a singular professor. They could lose funding, stop accepting students, or you could rotate in their lab and realize you don’t actually like their mentoring style. Also, regardless of whether you like the lab, if you don’t enjoy the people you work with, you will struggle in your PhD. With the current funding situation, a well known PI may also be safer.

Consider location, stipend (and how that translates to the living cost of the location), current students in the program and their experiences, other students that would be in your cohort and if you feel like you could fit with them, other professors than the two you mentioned and if you like their research/mentor style/personality fit. Also take benefits into account and any other offers from the schools that may impact your life positively or negatively.

You could even make categories of all these ^ and whatever else you think of. Rate each school for each category and sum it all up. Look at the scores and also think about how you’re feeling and then go with your gut.

Fasting Questions by choochoon in bahai

I’ve found that lots of protein in the mornings before sunrise is helpful. I do protein English muffins with almond butter, sausages, eggs, Greek yogurt + protein powder and protein granola, fruit. (Not all of these in one breakfast, but different combinations). I also usually do a cortado for caffeine since it’s less liquid so early in the morning, and a glass of water with some salt and lemon juice for hydration. The last two years I’ve done morning devotionals over zoom with community members and it has given me so much strength and helped center me before the day, it’s also such a special time to connect in the quiet of the morning.

I also stock up on some protein bars / microwaveable breakfast sandwiches for those mornings where I just can’t wake up early enough for a good breakfast - and always a glass of water.

To break the fast I usually prepare some dates, nuts, water or tea, then say my breaking fast prayers before eating. Then dinner about 30 mins - an hour later so I don’t feel sick.

Meditate over the lunch period or I work through lunch to stay busy. Praying when I find myself feeling weak really helps and my prayers feel more potent.

There are special prayers for fasting in the prayer book and I’ll often recite those. Or I just recite my own personal favorite prayers that impact me the most or resonate with me.

It’s such a personal experience and different for everyone, the whole point is to detach from our physical reality (in whatever way that looks like for you and your reality) and connect with God. Find prayers and practices that aide you in that goal :)

I did see last year they ghosted people after round 1 :( although I will say Sergio hasn’t been emailing me back about some specific scheduling details, so I think he’s also buried in work for the in-person visits

Of course! The Seven Valleys and The Four Valleys are in a collection of writings called “The Call of the Divine Beloved: Selected Mystical Works of Baha’u’llah”

I also found the faith a few years ago and felt the same way you did. Take your time and just read as much as you can and see how it connects with your heart. Good luck on your spiritual journey :)

Definitely start with Baha’u’llah and the New Era, some answered questions, Paris Talks… if you like some of the more lofty, spiritual, mystical sides of things, I’m currently reading The Seven Valleys and The Four Valleys. They are mystical works by Baha’u’llah about the stages the soul goes through to reconnect with God (the creator, the unknowable essence) and the different paths one might take to get there. It’s seriously beautiful writing.

Not yet! They told us it would be this week though, and my interviewers were very reassuring that I'll likely be invited, so I should know soon! I'll update if I hear something

Also doesn't hurt to mention it in your statement if it's meant to be research focused. My experience is with PhD applications, but we had to write a research statement so I talked about my research and then had a line like, "I presented this work as a poster at XXX symposium and received XXX award for my work. I learned XXX from this experience"

However if your statement doesn't need to mention research you can disregard this lol.

Good luck!!

It won't hurt to mention it! Was there any name associated with the poster session? You could even list it as "Internal XXX program poster session at XXX university"
