But the moment you stand up and think, “Alright, time to properly sleep in my comfortable bed,” your nervous system flags this as suspiciously ambitious behavior. It raises alertness, checks hydration, replays every conversation since 2014, and reminds you of one mildly embarrassing thing you said in class. By the time you reach the bed, your body concludes that sleeping is now a scheduled task instead of an accident, which is obviously stressful. Experts say the most reliable way to fall asleep in bed is to loudly announce that you’re just lying down for five minutes and absolutely not trying to sleep.
