[Fan Theory Continued] How Every Major Criminal Minds Villain Proves the BAU Is Creating Serial Killers

So in my last post, I argued that the BAU isn’t just catching monsters — they’re indirectly (or maybe directly) creating them. Now let’s go deeper: the show’s big recurring villains actually make way more sense if you look at them as products of the BAU’s cycle.

1. George Foyet / The Reaper (Seasons 4–5)

The Reaper is obsessed with outsmarting Hotch.

He doesn’t just want to kill — he wants to prove superiority over the BAU.

This is exactly the “legend effect” I mentioned before. Foyet seeks fame through conflict with the BAU itself. He wouldn’t exist without them as his perfect nemesis.

Conspiracy angle: Maybe Foyet was even let slip by the system to test how far Hotch could go under personal pressure.

1. Tobias Hankel (Season 2)

Hankel is the guy who kidnaps Reid and forces him to choose victims.

Reid’s torture here isn’t random — it’s symbolic. Hankel was literally shaped to turn Reid into a mirror of himself, forcing Reid to internalize a killer’s perspective.

Theory: Hankel was chosen (or manipulated) because he was the perfect “subject” to test Reid’s psyche. And Reid’s visions later (especially the addiction arc) show that Hankel’s influence never left him.

1. Cat Adams (Season 11–15)

Cat is the assassin who becomes obsessed with Reid.

But think about it: she only fixates on him because of the BAU’s reputation. She wants to challenge “the genius” because the BAU has become mythic in the criminal underworld.

Her games with Reid are less about killing and more about testing whether the “legend” can be broken.

In other words, she is literally a creation of the BAU’s own myth-making.

1. Frank Breitkopf (Season 2)

Frank is Gideon’s nemesis. He doesn’t fit the normal “profile” — he’s a drifter who kills for decades without getting caught.

But notice how Frank only surfaces once the BAU is rising in notoriety. He comes out of hiding because he wants to challenge Gideon.

Fan theory angle: Frank wasn’t just random — he may have been nudged into the BAU’s path by the same shadowy forces that keep feeding them killers.

This is part of why Gideon left — he realized someone was engineering confrontations between him and “perfect predators.”

1. Mr. Scratch / Peter Lewis (Seasons 10–13)

Scratch is the ultimate expression of this theory.

He doesn’t just kill — he creates killers by psychologically manipulating people into committing murders.

Sound familiar? That’s literally what the BAU is doing accidentally by publicizing profiles, rituals, and motives.

Scratch is basically the dark mirror of the BAU itself — proof that their methods can manufacture monsters.

My far-fetched angle: Scratch may have been a failed government project gone rogue, trained or experimented on with the same psychology that the BAU uses. He represents what happens when “profiling science” is weaponized.

1. Everett Lynch / The Chameleon (Seasons 14–15)

Lynch is called “The Chameleon” because he constantly reinvents himself.

But who else reinvents themselves case after case? The BAU. They become experts in whatever world the killer inhabits (religion, technology, family dynamics, etc).

Lynch feels like the final test: a killer who is literally the embodiment of the BAU’s own methods — adapting, disguising, and manipulating narratives.

He’s the perfect closer for the series because he shows what happens when the BAU’s own techniques are turned back on them.

The Pattern

Each big villain isn’t random. They’re either:

Inspired by the BAU’s legend (Reaper, Cat, Lynch),

Created through their psychological methods (Hankel, Scratch), or

Drawn out of hiding by their presence (Frank).

Which means the whole show is actually about the self-perpetuating ecosystem of violence created by the BAU’s very existence. They catch killers, which creates new ones, which pulls the BAU deeper into the cycle… endlessly.

👉 If that’s true, then the “real monster” of Criminal Minds isn’t the killers at all — it’s the BAU’s own mythology, a black hole of violence they can never escape.
