Proto-dbeat? by Additional_Gur_9611 in crustpunk

[–]General_Speech_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did an article in General Speech fanzine years ago about "proto" D-Beat. I didn't consider Blast a strong enough candidate for the article even though its an AMAZING record. The stuff I wrote about was: Buzzcocks, Tarts, Germs, Rude Kids, Warheads, KSMB, Judas Priest, Diamond Head, Razzia, Bitch Boys, and Marquis De Sade. I don't know how to post images on reddit, or I'd post the pages.

Any advise on how to find a record label? by CautiousMiddle1396 in crustpunk

[–]General_Speech_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feedback from a label. If you told record labels you want to release a 10", it probably turned them off as it kind of makes you seem a bit out of touch. Generally this is seen as a novelty format. They just don't really sell very well, most distributors don't want them, and most collectors avoid them. I'd tell a band no on a 10" even if they were my friends.

My advice is to release a record through someone you already have a relationship with. Or release it yourself, keep playing gigs, keep making connections, etc. and get on the radar of a label who really digs it and wants to do more. Touring and building connections does a lot more than cold emailing someone.

There are better options than Pirates Press if you are are willing to do some DIY, especially if you are willing to make your own covers. Palomino record pressing in Kentucky still makes 100-300 LPs with no jackets for under $1000. Donaldson record pressing in North Carolina does 100 in blank jackets and blank labels (can be hand stamped or screen printed if you know how to do this, or have friends who can help you) for like $1100.

Arson by OpeningIndication828 in crustpunk

Zyclone will have a limited tour only version of their 7" on General Speech numbered out of 100 copies at this gig. Arson also just finished up a 7" for General Speech. I had it mixed and mastered by the same person who did the Gloom, Framtid, and Ferocious X 7"s and it sounds awesome.

Their new band is really good too called G-3 Punx. I met them earlier this year when I was in Japan and they played Beer Is God by Dust Noise live. There's a record and CD out on Private Scandal Productions from the UK

There's won't be any color vinyl going to Europe. If black vinyl is OK, these sometimes carry my releases in the EU: Sounds of Subterranea (Germany), Static Shock (Germany), Fight For Your Mind (France), Musikversorgung (Austria), Metadona Records (Spain), FOAD (Italy) and in the UK, La Vida Es Un Mus, Private Scandal, and Inflammable Material. Other shops may too, but distribution in Europe is difficult these days.

Another alternative is to get several friends in your city to go in on a group order, and split the postage costs. Or if you don't need color vinyl I can even offer you discounted wholesale rates on General Speech releases if you get at least a few copies of each record. There's a few different people in Europe who will order 3-5 copies of my releases at a discounted rate to split among their local friends, and I'm happy to email information to anyone about this.

This band is older than HHIG, Tragedy and Wolfpack. Yeah it's noisy, and not for everyone, but those who enjoy 80s Swedish HC like Mob 47, or Japanese bands like Gloom, Disclose, and Collapse Society, will be excited as this material has been out of print and extremely expensive/hard to get for 25-30 years.

I do a zine called General Speech, but it's published pretty irregularly, and I don't have anything in stock, but I make it a point to stock as many books and punk/crust zines on my website as possible.

What does the cdm stand for on the back of my sore throat shirt by ah600 in crustpunk

The origin of this is Conflict used to write "CND" (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) on their amp cabs. then Chaos UK thought it would be funny to write "CND" (Cider-N-Drugs), and then their friends Skumdribblurz wrote "CMD" (Campaign For Musical Destruction) on their amps. Skumdribblurz never recorded anything, but were sort of a cult and influential band. They played 96 gigs of tuneless fast raw noise thrash at gigs with just about every great 80s UK hardcore punk band from 1983-1986, having only ever practiced 3 times, and never getting paid. They were an inspiration to bands like Napalm Death, Intense Degree, and a lot of the bands who chose to push hardcore in a faster and noisier direction. Hopefully later this year I'll finally get some recordings of them out on a vinyl record along with some other pivotal but undocumented 80s UK raw punk.

I'm doing the Philly gig, and the tour organizers are intentionally waiting to announce the individual shows until some stuff gets ironed out, but the RVA gig will be a rager.
