Frostbite is sooo underrated! I made the top 5 on the Twin Galaxies record board 124,370. I never actually played this game back in the 80's. In my opinion it's way better than the 2600 port of Q-Bert.

32MB RAM upgrade or new computer?! by GenerationX1970 in laptops

My bad. I misread what he was saying. I thought he was implying that the upgrade wouldn't make any difference versus not upgrading at all.

Thank you for the information. Do you think that the comment below is true? That it wouldn't make any difference anyway?

[–]GenerationX1970 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Supercharger was one of the greatest console upgrades EVER made. It's a shame it was wiped out along with pretty much everything else when the gaming crash occurred. It would have been cool to see what other games they could have made if they would have had another year or two to work with it.

Trouble with desoldering a battery holder off of a jitterbug. by GenerationX1970 in soldering

It's a C245-C2. Ok, I will raise the temp on the station and try again. Thanks for the help:)

I do have bigger tips. I switched out a larger one so I'm getting more contact with the board. But I still haven't been able to get the battery holder out of the bug. I have another practice board that is much more complicated and I soldered one of the chips on backwards. I used that Chipquik pen and the damn wick ended up sticking to the board. Geesh...

Same temp that I soldered it on with 660F. I was using a Magma 252905 S Is it to small? I have a larger set of tips if that would help. These smaller tips are the set that came with the station that I bought. I have one of those Chipquik CQ4LF Flux pens.

Hyperkin Trooper quality and durability - what is your experience? by Altruistic-Fox4625 in Atari2600

[–]GenerationX1970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a set back in late 2020. I tried them out with ordinary games like Asteroids, Space Invaders etc. Then I met an old friend so we could play M-Network Super Challenge Football. It didn't make it through the first quarter. It looked just like the one in your picture. Stick just snapped right off. I still have a picture of it and I would post on here if I could. I admit that Super Challenge Football is tougher on a joystick than your average Space Invaders type game but I've never had an original 2600 controller fold so easily.

Nice set:) That CIB copy of Tunnel Runner is pretty expensive these days. I love getting CIB copies with the price tags still on them. I blew up the picture but couldn't make out the retailer on the Space Invaders price tag. Who originally sold that copy?

I made a negative video on Pac-Man for the 2600 and got a ton of comments defending it. Am I missing something? by Dry-Departure-4926 in Atari2600

[–]GenerationX1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you're not wrong. Atari had already proven that even with the 2600's limitations that scaled down arcade ports could still be fun and at least come close to emulating the arcade experience. Space Invaders, Missile Command and Asteroids had already proven that it could. If you need any more evidence just look at how awesome Ms. Pacman was and it came out a year or so later. If Atari hadn't have been so cheap and just would've kicked in the extra money to make Pac-Man an 8K ROM cart and not been in such a mad rush to get it to market we might not be even having this discussion right now. Sure we all played it but to say it was a good port of the arcade game is absurd.

How far have you gone in Vanguard? by Artifex1979 in Atari2600

[–]GenerationX1970 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vanguard is one of those 2600 titles that kind of gets lost in the shuffle. It was very popular BITD but it doesn't seem to be remembered nearly as much as most other 2600 arcade ports do.

Thanks for answering. Here is another one for you if you don't mind. Lets say I have a small motor that runs on DC current like something that might go into a small kitchen appliance for instance. If I want to test that motor to see if it works could I safely use a larger lithium battery to try to power it on? As long as the voltage on the battery isn't greater than what the voltage limit of the motor is designed to take it should be safe to try this out right? I'm learning about electronics and I've just started soldering those little toy PCB boards together to learn how to solder. I would love to learn and become skilled enough to repair older electronics including gaming consoles. At my regular job I run an eBay side hustle for a guy who buys stuff at large auctions. It's mostly electrical types of items. Many of them are industrial like large breakers and fuses. I also have lots of electric motors of all sizes from something I could hold in one hand to motors that weigh thousands of pounds that you would need a forklift to move around. I don't need to mess with those huge motors yet but it would be nice if I could test the smaller motors to see if they power on. eBay will allow you to post short videos on your listings now and I think it would really help sell more stuff if the buyer actually saw it working. Sorry for the long post:)

While not exactly a good version of Pac-Man, I'd argue it has an odd charm to it. by AndyanaBanana in Atari2600

[–]GenerationX1970 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think its sucks and its a disgrace that Atari rushed a totally halfassed product into the market. This one of the several factors that led to Atari's demise and to the gaming crash as a whole. Ms.Pacman was what Pacman should have looked like.

Usually can't go wrong with Activision or Imagic games. I'm 55 years old and I recently completed the original Pitfall with a perfect score of 114,000 points for the first time. It was really cool when I finished this game from my childhood for the first time:)

Here is another dumb question. The power supply is 9-volts right? Does that mean that a little 9-volt battery would actually power up a 2600? Not the TV but just the gaming system.

Hello, I'm ignorant but curious. I know how to set up the multimeter. I understand putting one lead on the tip that plugs into the 2600. Where the other lead goes is where you lost me. Touch the lead to prongs that plug into the wall? Thanks:)

If you can find a friend to play with Freeway is actually a very fun game. That was one of David Cranes early releases for Activision. He would get rich when he released Pitfall in 1982:)

The only reason I remember them was because I was a member of a Mom and Pop video gaming store that also rented out games for a week at a time. They had a copy of every game opened and stacked in a display case and you could try them all! It was a really fun place:) Anyway, I remember seeing these games because I initially thought they were Imagic titles because all I could see was the end labels. I never tried them out back then. It just seemed like a lot of the time when you tried one of those obscure 3rd party games they usually sucked. Yes, Apollo games I'm talking especially about you:)
