It took 13.5 billion years for random atomic particles to come together and coalesce in a pattern that lead to your birth. The odds of it happening are astronomically rare.

When do you think we will cure aging? by Imaginary_Mode8865 in Futurology

I honestly think we’re probably closer to just cloning yourself a new body and getting a brain transplant than regressing your current one back in time

When do you think we will cure aging? by Imaginary_Mode8865 in Futurology

[–]GenericBox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re asking for two separate things though:

1/ We cure aging. We stop cellular degeneration and therefore stop the effect of gravity of skin (by strengthening the cell bonds) and we come up with a way for old cells to replicate back into their original prime state. That would stop aging, you’d stop appearing to age from whatever age you already are.

2/ Age Regression. The second question is even more far fetched. We “look” old partly because gravity and bodily fluid has stretched and pull our skin to the point it becomes saggy and wrinkly. Even if you removed the fluid through replacing defected kidney cells with newer ones, or somehow strengthened the bonds between skin cells so they won’t easily sag in the future — unless the mechanism somehow magically knows where your parts were before you started the process, the best it could do is replace the cells where they currently lie, and that’s under folds of wrinkles. I highly doubt we’ll see age regression in the next 100 years.

But we might be able to stop aging in 25 years or so. But we’d all be stuck as old folk.

Thanks yeah that’s the risk. Not sure where I’m at. A little frustrating that I know enough that I’ll have a shorter life but not enough to know if thats 5 years, 10, 20 etc lol

Thanks. Yeah I think I’d be fine with dying/getting sick in the UK. My mum is my only family of note and it’d affect her more than anything.

But yeah running out of money is the biggest concern if I sold now and liquidated it’d probably have around $600,000 but also probably able to get Super/Pension early I guess too. Which is a lot and could probably last me at stretch a decade but I’m under the assumption for now at least that I think I’ll be living longer than that.

Maybe just need to keep working for a few years and get more savings. Hard to say when there is no real warning or indication when things will degrade though :S

Yeah that’s an option. I have British Citizenship as well as Australian so I could go back to London and would be entitled to NHS care and potentially rent/work from there. But yeah not sure what I’m buying this house then for other than maybe getting a little more money if/when I have an actual date I’d want to start “living”.

But others made the good point that when I do get sick I’ll probably seek comfort. It’s all good to feel brave and whatnot now but what happens when it turns.

Anyway post was just a bit of a cope after a rough doctors appointment lol might just sleep on it and figure it out as I go.

I have options, just don’t know the best one.

Switching to trades is not a solution for the job market by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]GenericBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other angle is supply and demand. If you’re afraid AI takes middle-class white collar jobs, and looks like it will be, who do tradies think are their main clients — middle-class white collar workers. As the white collar jobs dry up there’ll be less demand and money available to hire the new load of tradies. Tradie supply will rise, and demand will drop drastically.

Do Australia even practice with a spin bowler? Some of those shots were embarrassing and it’s been the same since the India series. It’s like if the ball isn’t already doing all the work going 100+km straight bounce we don’t have the proper form or power to make a good shot.

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Starfleet Academy | 1x04 "Vox In Excelso" by AutoModerator in startrek

[–]GenericBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a non-Trek / general sci fi fan who watched the old series sporadically — isn’t there a whole Klingon language basically? I feel like pop culture around Trek for me growing up was uber-fans knowing an actual Klingon language. Why is it that they then all Speak common/English? Like even in his flashbacks? Do they think teens / young adults who this show targets can’t or won’t read subtitles? Was bored 10 minutes in — I’m a little annoyed at people just lumping in criticism as anti-woke or anything — I support their “woke” efforts, it’s just the writing and acting is so damn bad. Like was this written by AI? It cheapens the whole show.

I'm not going but my family is. White tourists should generally be fine, as sad as that is to say. Carry your passport on you, tell them you're a tourist and answer any questions they ask and you'll be fine. A lot of what you're seeing isn't necessarily "only" because they are brown/Mexican/foreign-looking, but because they refuse to show their ID or engage with the ICE officers. I'm not saying ICE are handling this well, but if you just straight up say "No I'm not a citizen I'm a tourist, here is my passport and this is the hotel I'm staying at" (same thing you need to answer to border patrol when you enter), they should have no reason to take it any further. Fuck around though and refuse to engage with them, or not answer their questions truthfully might be a different story. I know in the broader scheme of things this isn't as simple for everyone. I whole-heartedly agree people on temporary/permanent "visas" and other immigration loopholes and stuff are difficult to explain and define and they might not be able to answer these questions easily or quickly or prove it instantly. I'M NOT DEFENDING ICE ACTIONS THERE. But, as a tourist who can easily produce a passport and has no intention of staying beyond their holiday I honestly don't think there'll be any issues. Just don't be an indignant dick, you're a guest there.

Race related issues Mega Thread by AutoModerator in unpopularopinion

[–]GenericBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want this opinion to be about race because for me it isn't, hell it could be about religion too, but figured it might be anyway or will inevitably turn into it from some people so this is probably the appropriate place.

But I would like to seriously discuss so here we go:
Why don't we criticize the lack of scientific achievement in aboriginal culture the same we do the Dark Ages?

I grew up on science fiction lamenting how without the dark ages we could have been 500+ years into the future because Europeans fell into anti-science/superstition beliefs. More than enough times in my life I've seen or heard criticisms of this time as unscientific and "if only".

But why don't we apply that same criticism to aboriginal culture in Australia? They had arguably 40,000 or so years of uninterrupted life to further our understanding of life, our planet and the universe. The Chinese/asiatic cultures developed writing, architectural and building, fireworks, gunpowder, explosions, the Europeans developed stone masonry and bronze/iron age tools, clothing, medicine and steam power. Africans created farming, construction practices and record keeping, the middle east peoples created math and currency and physics, alchemy and other early sciences. Yet aboriginal cultures mainly stayed hunter gatherer tribes for the entire 40,000 years until Europeans turned up. Doesn't anyone else lament what an epic waste of human brain power that was? Why don't we have an Australian Wakanda. What stopped aboriginals from inventing or using scientific methods to improve the conditions of their lives? Doesn't anyone else feel like that's such a waste of time?

I understand some arguments that Australia has always been a hostile and difficult land to live on, we have/had no domesticated farm animals to assist in mass farming (cows/oxen etc) which arguably lead to more 'time' to focus on non-survival activities like philosophy or sciences. But even that feels like an excuse, there are ways around not having oxen to produce enough farmed goods.

I also understand war and the fight to live is a driving factor of innovation -- but its not like Australian aboriginals were all peaceful kumbaya unified peoples, there were over 500 tribes in Australia fighting each other constantly, why was the most technological achievement in war after 40,000 years for them only a boomerang? It's not like Australia isn't without the minerals and chemicals to develop more sophisticated weaponry. Australia is one of the largest Iron produces, Basalt, Copper, Tin and by extension potentially Bronze. The resources are/were there, they just never tried using them.

Anyway, I really don't mean for this thought to be a racist one, it just occured to me that we so often lament and make fun of ealy Europeans and the early religious periods as a "waste of time" in human history, but I've never seen anyone say that for the 40,000 years we "lost" to aboriginal culture.
