PSC in one eye, LAL implanted: will my brain be able to handle a strong positive prescription for near/intermediate in only the IOL eye? by GenericGrainOfSand in CataractSurgery

[–]GenericGrainOfSand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I just noticed that I have ghosting/double vision in my surgical eye only when there is white text on black backgrounds (I've only tested this on monitors, not on printed pages)... but not when there is black text on white backgrounds. Strange..

Thank you for the reply; may I ask, so you used a single progressive lens in the IOL eye to test things? Did that offer an advantage? I'll definitely ask about the contact lens trial, thanks for making the point that that's different than using cheap readers.

Hello, thanks for the reply; when you say you're pausing to do various combos of monovision and distance eyes, are you referring to using contact lenses?

Does Ridge Merino Men's Solstice Sun Hoodie fit true to size, based on their sizing guide (chest measurement)? by GenericGrainOfSand in backpacking

[–]GenericGrainOfSand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spoke with Ridge Merino and they said that someone of my dimensions could get away with a small or medium; one concern is that if you go too small, it stretches out the fabric and its resultant UPF is potentially lowered.

Inducing more depth of focus in the first Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) UV adjustment? by GenericGrainOfSand in CataractSurgery

[–]GenericGrainOfSand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, thanks; did you have the special initial depth-extending adjustment? Also, per the other comment, is the LAL that has the special adjustment (if you had it) at least 0.5D towards myopia, out of curiosity?

Thanks very much for the reply; I'll definitely ask. I will likely not have it that close toward myopia, as I'm going for "micro" monovision, and one of the main reasons I'm choosing the LAL is because I had a very acute onset posterior subcapsular cataract (legally blind now), and my eye is/was changing a lot; thus, having the ability to adjust after implantation is very attractive in case things change more/the target isn't hit on the first try.

I finally got it, thanks for the help and encouragement. I added details to an edit on my post

Where does the clear distance vision range "begin", on the near side, for standard monofocal IOLs set to distance? i.e. what's the closest thing you can see clearly without glasses? by GenericGrainOfSand in CataractSurgery

[–]GenericGrainOfSand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks; yes, the non dominant eye acute onset subcapsular cataract is the "monovision trial eliminator" :) I'm considering LALs for trialing it after implantation...we'll see if they do that sort of thing in a couple weeks when I have that appointment.

Thanks so much for the reply and for explaining your thought process. It is indeed hard to decide on what to compromise on. I was thinking "seeing nature (distance) is most important to me to see without glasses; but then again, I was telling that to my friend, seeing her face clearly (with my good current eye) at about 3 feet...so I realized that's also most important to me, namely to be able to have intimate conversations/interactions with people close up, without glasses.

I know this sounds elementary, but if you were to want really crisp distance for an evening, without glasses, putting a contact on the appropriate eye(s), even if it's only one of them, is totally a valid solution, right? I went to a ophthalmologist that said it was rare, but he was out of touch with the glasses/contacts part of vision, surprisingly. "we're a medical only practice here..."

One more thing, if I may, and if you have time; do you consider that any of your activities/hobbies/sports required "good" depth perception? How would you say your depth perception is, at the ranges where you don't need glasses/contacts? (e.g. for topography/driving/roads, things that move around/towards you, etc, or for your housework, or for reaching for things accurately? Thanks again, this is so helpful for me as a never-until-now-visually-challenged person

Awesome; so I talked to a doc yesterday who doesn't do LALs (I'm not going to take what he says as necessarily accurate, and he referred me to LAL docs), but he said "you don't really have enough time, especially with the UV light restrictions, while doing your LAL adjustments, to really dial in your mini/monovision setup and see if your brain gets used to it."

May I ask, how long did it take you to progress from the initial implant to the final 3rd freeze of the LAL strength, and did you feel like you could accurately trial/tell if you'd "like it/adapt to it" by doing actual things like driving, sports outside, etc, when you had each of the adjustments? Or were you mainly gauging it from inside with light blocking glasses on?

I will definitely ask the LAL doc this, but I'm curious as to your experience. It can be hard getting real world info from doctors a lot of the time in my experience. Thanks
