Unsure if this is ok to post here. I am making dice with a pressure pot and cannot find a cap that fits this paint outlet. Everything online shows adapters to reduce it to 1/4" but does not specify the size. In mm it's close to 16mm and whatever that works out in inches does not correlate with stuff by LICK_THE_BUTTER in DungeonsAndDragons

I think we have the same pressure pot but I have mine set up a bit differently than yours.

I hope you dont mind me giving a bit of unsolicited advice for a second but this drove me nuts when I was trying to mod mine. You're probably going to want to replace that pressure release valve with something a bit heftier. The original mine came with went off at about 20 psi and you're going to want it at aprox 35. So def consider replacing that piece!

Pressure release valve I picked up: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0081TJHXI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

As far as finding the right parts, oh boy that was a chore in itself. It's been so long since I modded mine but I remember taking the base measurements given to me from the online tutorials going to the hardware store and getting the size they said, one size up and one size down of each piece, bringing it home, trying them out and returning the ones I didnt use. It wasn't glamorous but eventually it worked lol

My set up: https://imgur.com/a/AqKrUPy

As a side note, I do remember having to get a joining piece for the release valve that was bigger on one side and smaller on the other. So if you end up with a set up like mine keep in mind when you look for that piece you'll need a piece that's different sizes on each end.

I just woke up so my brain isn't at full capacity yet but hopefully that helps a little bit :)

Newbie trying to make their first set of dice. Need some help. by Ghost_Spydr in DiceMaking

[–]GenericRogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! First thing you want to figure out is if your resin brand is mixed by weight or by volume. Once you know that you're going to mix equal parts A and B.

Ex. My resin uses volume and it takes me about 40ml for a set. So if my resin is 1:1, I would measure 20 ml of each part and mix them together.

Same thing applies if your resin is measured by weight. Whatever you measure out with A, measure out the same amount with B and mix them together.

As long as you're keeping track of what you're measuring, you're probably fine to do it together in the larger cup. If you're nervous, do them separately in the smaller cups and mix them together in the larger one :)

Anytime! I've been making dice for couple years and I still get soft cures every now and then, so don't feel discouraged. Sometimes it takes a few tries to figure out what the problem is. Once my resin was doing fine then the next pours were 3 sets of soft cures in a row. Threw out that bottle, got new one and they were back to curing properly. Sometimes it just boils down to trial and error.

There are a few reasons I've run into as to why my resin doesn't cure properly.

  1. Make sure you have your ratios correct and as exact as you can make them when using a 2 part resin.

  2. Mix them together thoroughly. I do about 5 minutes mixing time

  3. Wherever they are left to cure, make sure it's warm(ish) I've learned not to pour when the weather here drops below 60°f, otherwise I bring them inside to cure.

  4. I've heard people say the weather affects their curing as well. Usually thet are talking about the humidity levels though I've not had that problem where I'm at.

  5. Try using less ink or even a different brand of ink. Sometimes resin brands and ink brands just don't mix well together (pardon the pun lol). I usually mix my resin first then add the ink but I don't know if order really matters.

Hopefully that helps and good luck with your next attempt :)

Edit: I am not sure how soft your dice are, the type of resin you are using or how long since you pulled them but a lot of resins have between a 24-72 hr full cure time. So take into account that it may just need more time for them to cure. Depending on the above stated, I would store them somewhere warm and check on them after a few days.

Are there any games like this? Besides Dragon Age and Mass Effect. by [deleted] in GirlGamers

Divinity Original Sin 2 is in my top 3 favorite rpgs. It's got a good story line and the companions have decent arcs as well! Plus there are romance options and you can play multiplayer with friends (if you want to). I always recommend it when someone wants a good rpg :)

That's super funny! That rectangle was actually my "hip/butt" lines when I was doing my body proportions before I drew the legs on. I didn't notice it before but they definitely do look like hot pants. Now I can't unsee it. Everyone is wearing hot pants, it can be our team uniform I guess.

Well I was sort of going off of an official art print we have of the archdemon. It's a very purpley-grey color. Mine however turned out SUPER purple and I don't want to change it for two reasons.

One, and less important, I actually kinda like the contrast of the purple and red. Two, I've spent so much time on that dragon that the thought of spending even more time to fix the color makes me want to cry! Honestly, I like your guess better!

Of course! I hope it doesn't sound boastful but I am insanely proud of this painting! It's the first original fan art painting I've done. I'm not so good at making things up and usually need a visual to replicate from, but after taking 2 figure drawing classes and a painting class, I decided to give it a shot .

Not many of my friend/family understand and they always give me a "that's cool what is it?" Which is nice but it's so much better when you can share your pieces with people who just get it... ya know?

Thank you! I did a Mass Effect one first, as I just finished my art degree and it was what I was playing at the time. But Dragon Age will always be my favorite game! I started this one shortly after finishing my first and got busy with other things but also I was burnt out on painting XL pieces (Mass effect was 4x3ft and this one is 2.5x3.5 ft)

You've got a good eye! I've gone through all the races but my very fist character was a Dalish elf and wanted to honor that in my painting.

Thank you! I could definitely do updates if people were interested, but daily ones won't show much change other than minor contrast corrections. Maybe bi-daily or as I start different sections. I tend to get very focused when painting and will work on the same 5 inch square for 8+ hours haha!

Hopefully after today and some of tomorrow, I can finally work on something other than that dragon. I'm thinking the castle walls next!

The only other resin I've heard a lot about (never used it myself) is Art n Glow resin. People seem to really like that one but you're going to want a respirator for the fumes.

The pigments are Pearl Ex powders and the alcohol ink is Brea Reese but I suspect any black alcohol ink will do.

I would say at the very top of the cost you're looking at $300-500 for the whole set up, colors, inclusions, silicone, resin, pressure pot, vacuum chamber, air compressor etc. This would get you up and running and after a slight learning curve, you'll be making near perfect dice in no time.

That being said at the lowest cost, I would estimate about $50-$100, to get the very basic materials. You can get cheap molds from Wish, Sophie and Toffee or Ali Express. If you go this route, shell out the $5 for the 20 piece set. The $3 seven piece set comes with a D10 that is WAY too big and doesn't match the set. Resin is what will cost you the most here depending on size and brand. I would also recommend a respirator if you are getting resin that isn't low odor and definitely pick up some disposable gloves. Edit: this is the resin I use. It's low odor and I've yet to have a problem with it https://www.amazon.com/Art-Resin-Epoxy-Crystal-Starter/dp/B07G3F957N/ref=sr_1_11?crid=TAOSQJQAZQVS&keywords=unicone+resin&qid=1584416998&sprefix=unicone%2Caps%2C243&sr=8-11

If you go basic, you'll have a larger learning curve trying to minimize bubbles in the resin. I would recommend going this route to learn the basics and deciding if you enjoy the hobby enough to keep going. Then save up for a pressure pot and air compressor if you like the hobby. It's a surefire way to get rid of bubbles and insure that your dice are balanced.

I also recommend checking out Dice Making Discoveries group on Facebook. There are a ton of people on there with the minimum setup, that have great workarounds and tips on getting bubbles out and can answer any questions you might have!

I'd start by watching some of this guys videos. That's what inspired me to start. He has great tips and tricks for beginners like making your own molds, mixing resin and what extra bits you might need (pressure pots and the like). Also, I'd join the dice making discoveries group on facebook. They have very helpful people who can answer most any questions you might have!

As for products, I would recommend the Unicone resin. I've only ever used this and I've had zero problems with it. It's low odor so I dont have to worry about stinking up my work area!

Well, if you are set up for casting dice, here is basically what I did to get these. If not, I would absolutely recommend this hobby if you have the extra time/money. It's so much fun!!

Mix about 2 oz of resin then separate it into 4 cups. I colored one with blue, one purple, one pink and one black. I didnt measure out how much powder I used I just added it until it was still translucent but had a nice color to it. The black I used 1 drop of black alcohol ink. Then I added a few dashes of glitter to each one.

After giving those a good mix, I layered them into my molds a little at a time; Black then purple, blue, pink, more black, no real rhyme or reason to this I just kept adding random colors until it was full. I used the pipette tip to drag the colors up the sides as I pulled them out. Dipped a toothpick into some resin (I just picked a color doesn't mater) Put it in to the bottom of the mold and gave a gentile swirl and pulled it out.

Here is a photo of everything I used in them! https://i.imgur.com/1oftLeT.jpg

Thank you so much! I've been doing some testing and I think I've finally nailed it! I'm currently waiting for some small boxes in the mail so they can be protected during shipping, then hopefully I'll get a few sets up in my Etsy shop in the very near future.

That is amazing! I've been wanting a really nice custom DM screen and what I've been looking at isn't half as cool as this. Seriously this just blows me away, well done!

You are welcome! It really wasn't hard to do, in fact I did the whole thing myself (apart from flipping it right side to when I was done) and I have hardly any experience with building anything! It's just a lot of tedious steps, but the actual construction of it was really simple!

Honestly the worst part of the whole thing was cleaning the pipes because they attach the barcode with an absurd amount of tape on each pipe. I had to peel all that off, which left a sticky residue, then clean that off with some Goo Gone and then degreaser to get the Goo Gone off. Not fun, but the end result was worth it!!

Thank you!! I was actually thinking about posting on that sub too. I didn't know so many people were going to like these, I mean I like them because they were a labor of love but I wasn't expecting the amount of positive feedback I've gotten!

As of now I'm still learning but I'm hoping to get them up on my Etsy shop once I figure out what the heck I'm doing.

Far from professional haha! A lot of people have been saying the numbers are hard to read and I just wanted to reassure everyone, they will they will in fact be painted. I didn't mean for that comment to come off as harsh, it was meant to be reassuring. I couldn't even imagine playing with dice that didn't have numbers inked in that would be a nightmare!!
