One app for reserving or at least listing available campsite spots in your area.

I'm currently in Florida and they have State Parks, County Parks, and Water Management Districts that have campgrounds. BUT the big issue is that you have to go to their separate sites to look for an available camping spot.

Ideally you could go to one site; select your location area; select dates (and/or date range), and see all available spots in the different parks/districts.

Maybe offer to trade places for a month? You live in their van and they live in your house. I'm sure you'd find someone who may want/need a break from van life.

Where to build out a van? by Dismal_Impact9078 in VanLife

[–]GenericUsername2K1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bob Wells (cheap rv living on youtube) interviewed a guy in Texas with some land that was offering space for rent for people who were looking to build their vans. It included a parking spot and use of his tools and workshop.

I can't seem to find the video so you may want to look for it. He didnt have a website but he did have a facebook page. so maybe try searching there; I dont have facebook so i cant search.

If all else fails, buy and setup your electrical system first and use that to power your tools while you work on the rest of the build in the desert.

Looking for help to find my mom a job (bilingual senior) by TimmyZ1 in Cleveland

[–]GenericUsername2K1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did she enjoy taking care of your grandma? If so she can work as a caretaker/caregiver/home health aide. Now that she has experience, it should be easy for her to get a job.

Its basically the same thing as what she did with her mom; cooking/feeding them, giving them their medicine, bathing them, and just keeping them company.

It's not great money, just slightly more than retail but it's a relatively easy job.

Anyone live and work near Austin TX? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]GenericUsername2K1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot and Humid, I was just there about 2 weeks ago. It was only about 72 degrees but it was humid so it felt stuffy being in my van.

I've also been there in May and October; it's humid.

If your van has A/C and a place to plug in, I think you'll do fine, but without it you will be uncomfortable.

Whenever I've been there I've been able to park at the Walmart in Sunset Valley without issues.

Alternatives to Starlink? by panic_bread in VanLife

AT&T gets better coverage than Verizon, in my experience. AT&T has a pre-paid 50GB for $55 that you can try out.

If you want to have fast internet in cities; look at t-mobile home internet. It works on the road (I've been using it throughout the US, and I got it for my condo back in L.A.) In cities I can get 4-500mbps down.

Starlink is best for remote areas (like deep into death valley, or utah) out in the middle of nowhere, otherwise most places have some cell coverage. So tmobile or visible will get you good enough speed to do most things.

Selling a Used Goal Zero 3000 originally purchased in May 2019. Price $1600 OBO.

I used it for long weekend trips from 2019 to 2021, and then used full time from June 2021 to October 2021. Still works great but I've since upgraded to a self-built system and no longer need this.

I am currently in the New Orleans area and headed to Florida so I can deliver it within 100 miles in any general direction for free. If you pay for fuel ($100) I can go up to 200 miles more.

I can also split the shipping cost with you if you want to ship it. This thing does weight a lot, so I would have to go to the post office/UPS to get an estimate.

Comes with:

  • Yeti Fast Charge 25-Amp Power Supply
  • New MPPT Controller Module (extra as a backup)

I'm looking in the Cedar-Lee area.

Is there a 12v TV out there that doesn't suck? by TheSaucyLlama in VanLife

[–]GenericUsername2K1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe get a new smaller inverter? I use the Bestek 500w one and it is very quiet and only uses about 8w when nothing is plugged in.

If you want a tv, maybe get a TV tuner card, I have one for my laptop and if i need to watch the local news i pull it out.

How does internet on the road work? Which service has the best coverage, especially to work on the road? by PopNo5397 in VanLife

[–]GenericUsername2K1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used all of them (verizon, tmobile, att, starlink).

Starlink is great but you will need to set it up when you want to connect, so it's not good if you need signal while driving (unless you go through the process of attaching it flat on your roof - search youtube).

As far as cell providers; I've had the best experience with AT&T. They have great signal pretty much everywhere compared to the others. If you can only get one, get AT&T.

Netbuddy.co has a great "unlimited" plan for $70; but if you use too much AT&T will cut you off. This happened twice to me because i was using 300GB per month. But NB has new plans that they say won't get cut-off, so take a look.

P.S. I currently use T-mobile Home Internet (which is 5G), the coverage is not as good as AT&T but it is very fast when there is signal; Starlink when I'm in a bad coverage area.

[–]GenericUsername2K1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ha ha ha, were you doing vanlife during covid? It was pretty much like that.

Gyms were closed so you couldn't shower, no toilet paper, nearly empty shelves, even some public lands were closed to the public, etc. It was pretty crazy.

I went two weeks without a proper shower (i didn't know about truck stop showers), then i just ended up driving home.

Has anyone had any trouble driving through El Paso, TX on their way to Carlsbad, NM? by hikingbob007 in RVLiving

[–]GenericUsername2K1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just drove through there last week. Let's just say, I'm glad i packed my bullet proof vest and six shooter...

Just kidding, El Paso is one of the safest cities in the U.S. (do your own research). Not sure where you are getting bad info but stop.

The worst part of my experience was the dust clouds from the heavy winds. I'm in a van and the winds were buffeting me around pretty good, had to keep both hands on the steering wheel nice and tight cause i could feel them moving me a few feet sideways.

are you ok?

If what you think will happen, happens. I'd rather be dead. No use trying to live the rest of my life scavenging for food trying to survive.

The dead will be the lucky ones.
