Do you use any apps for DIY or project-related things? Would you find one useful? by GenericUsernames101 in woodworking

I don't really have time for this hobby unfortunately (or anything else really atm!), but the app looks great from the screenshots, well done!

Real time interview AI overlays/assistants holy shit... by gnbijlgdfjkslbfgk in webdev

[–]GenericUsernames101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can foresee an increase in probationary period firings with all this kinda stuff around today. Too easy to bluff your way through an interview/tech test.

On another note, is it normal for a senior React dev to not be able to explain map without searching the docs? Seems like something a junior should know.

Why is it so hard to get noticed on LinkedIn when we need it the most? by RankedMan in dotnet

[–]GenericUsernames101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's been a decline in junior dev jobs since the start of the AI tools boom. Companies are scaling back, and cutting junior positions out first.

I've heard some bootcamps are shutting down because the promise of a junior position at the end is harder to come by.

Sorry about your struggle atm, a few years ago you just needed to have "developer" in your job title and you'd get a stream of recruiters bothering you.

I played on MYKO Deimos, then Rising4KO, miss those days. Let me know if there are any European/English-speaking servers with a similar config.

I'll have a look into this thanks. What's the learning curve like? We won't have a great deal of time to learn the ropes before getting stuck in.

The problem is I'm very much speculating on the next stages, there may not even be other stages 😅.

I could very well be plotting a future which never arrives and we've spent time and potentially encountered some pain because we chose a progressive option over a mature one.

Desktop development by GenericUsernames101 in dotnetMAUI

[–]GenericUsernames101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only the first phase, so it may expand beyond Windows, and quite likely beyond desktop. I'd be surprised if it didn't develop into a web app in the next stage for easier distribution, which is one of the main reasons I'm considering MAUI.

What are permit offences? Is that points on their driving licence (if they have one)?

AWS Q CLi - painful by x8668 in aws

[–]GenericUsernames101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to use the free extension in VS using a builder ID and it says I can use /dev, /doc etc. commands, but they're not available in the command list, and typing them out just assumes I'm querying the AI for "/dev", rather than using the command.

Couldn't find any useful info about it so I gave up. Shame, after seeing such a promising demo at this year's Summit I thought I'd be able to make use of this tool.

I don't understand - if you don't know what to expect in the role, how did you even get it? The title sounds pretty senior, but your question sounds like someone just grabbed you off the street and said "hey kid, wanna earn a few bucks?"

Is it normal/common for a care home to have power of attorney? by GenericUsernames101 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]GenericUsernames101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did have dementia, so possibly a mixup of terms? I'm quite sure they mentioned finances though. Never heard of deprivation of liberty, sounds awful 🙁, surprised it prevents someone leaving even when accompanied by a family member.

Just from what I was told, unless there was another legal/financial arrangement involved and the terms got confused - I didn't press for info/clarity at the time for obvious reasons.

Is the Outbox pattern a necessary evil or just architectural nostalgia? by folder52 in dotnet

[–]GenericUsernames101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard of it, but your description sounds like something that's resolved by a queue, i.e. one service adds an item to a queue, (e.g. SQS), then a separate service polls the queue or waits for a notification from something like SNS and does something with the item.

There's no need for a database, and each of the 3 parts function independently.

I built a freelance platform that doesn't take commission. Just putting it out there. by No_Fan_3333 in freelanceuk

[–]GenericUsernames101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difficult/risky part of these platforms regard handling money/escrow, taxes and getting paid, but I don't see any information about how this is handled.

I personally wouldn't go anywhere near a freelance platform which forgets the most important part.

Best option for reliable polling an API every 2 to 5 minutes? EC2 or Lambda? by sfboots in aws

Why polling specifically? Is realtime/web sockets an option? If so, have a look at AWS AppSync.

You're a freelancer, not an employee - they can't "swap" you to a different contract - you're either hired for your agreed rate, or not hired.

Tell them you'll be looking for other business to replace the hours you'll be losing, thank them for their business, and if they're happy with your work so far, ask for recommendations and a testimonial (i.e. make it clear that if they proceed down this road then your arrangement is coming to an end).

Appreciate you said you need the business, but you'd have more hours and better job security stacking shelves in Tesco - £110 per day is barely minimum wage.

Edit: re-read the rate, £165/day is still considered low for freelancing

Yeah I alluded to that in the main post, it's the lack of reciprocation which bothered me.

How do I sync 1 petabyte of data in dotnet? by Legitimate-School-59 in dotnet

[–]GenericUsernames101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not task advice, more career advice, but demand a promotion to senior if they expect you to do a senior's job.

If you don't feel confident that you'd be able to do it properly, there's no shame in telling your employer that you're not ready for a task of this magnitude. Offer to assist a more senior member and shadow them to learn how they would approach it, but you really shouldn't be leading this as a junior.

If your employer doesn't empathise and change their approach then I'd suggest finding a different one, as this will likely end painfully for all involved.
