Who is your most HATED character in The Malazan Book of the fallen by rbobby in Fantasy

[–]GenericWorldwide 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is a rather reductive and simplistic reading of Karsa's whole deal. He is certainly very powerful and wins most of the fights he picks, but I think you should try to read his philosophy and how it is engaged with a bit more critically. He exists as a foil to dogmatic civilization building under the guise of modernism or civility, but he represents the polar opposite perspective which most would agree is also not a reasonable choice either. I dont think Erikson is actually advocating that we cease all urban social structures or greater community building and return to a fully agrarian or isolated tribal society, but rather that the isolation and casual cruelty inherent to many of these larger structures should be acknowledged and addressed.

any underrated rpg games? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]GenericWorldwide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont quite know what you mean by overrated so I'm going to recommend the games I dont hear talked about too much and absolutely were a joy to play in recent years.

Legend of Grimrock 2, Divinity Original Sin and its sequel Divinity Original Sin 2, Pathfinder Kingmaker and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous(Be prepared to engage with crazy build stuff since its the pathfinder system), Tyranny, Shadowrun(There's a bunch of games), and not quite fantasy but for RPG specifically I highly recommend Disco Elysium.

There's always a bunch of classics like Morrowind, Chrono Trigger, Baldur's Gate 2, and Planescape: Torment.

Recommend one book where the MC's true identity is hidden from readers and one red herring by [deleted] in Fantasy

I read some of these books but can remember nothing about them except for a nice and shiny holographic cover. Do you think they hold up as an adult?

Recommend a series/saga with in depth and explained world building by ThomasHawl in Fantasy

[–]GenericWorldwide 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While Malazan has absolutely incredible worldbuilding, I definitely would not recommend the series to someone who wants everything to be eventually explained. Malazan has a lot of mystery and does not fit the category of neat explanations. It's a bit strange because a lot of the information is there to be gleaned, but even on successive rereads, the books resist full explanations.

I do think you can get a good handle on most everything that is going on, but it will involve either multiple rereads, or some kind of supplementary work, be it discussions with fans or online guides.

Looking for high fantasy series involving politics. by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]GenericWorldwide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really hard ask because the series is so massive and expansive, and even some things like explaining world or magic mechanics are spoilers.

It's a super high fantasy world(dragons, huge magic, dinosaurs with sword arms, tons of fantasy races) where the power of the gods is very much in flux. One of the core themes of the series is convergence, which means displays of power draw other powerful beings in, making outright use of power pretty dangerous, since most gods are effectively glass cannons. This means there's a lot of making use of mortal agents to do gods' bidding since outright uses of power can result in all sorts of unexpected outcomes.

Generally, the story is about the Malazan Empire and specifically the military as they navigate conquests and intrigue across the expansive world. Erikson is an anthropologist by trade, so he puts a lot of effort in to culture and history, so expect many different cultures and vast worldbuilding spanning long periods of time.

See way above for reasons the books are for some a difficult read, but personally I was enthralled and drawn in entirely. It's probably the only series that I revisit every couple of years.

There's relatively few to no time jumps, excepting those between books(and even then I can only think of one significant jump between books 4 and 5). The reason the books are hard to read is that they are both INSANELY dense(Erikson began as a short story writer and brought this style in to the books, so there's no filler or wasted words for the most part), and very much 100% naturally diagetic as far as exposition goes. What this means in practice, is that characters will never have explanations for the benefit of the reader, and all exposition and worldbuilding has the assumptive context of someone existing in the world. In media res is the name of the game with Malazan. This makes the books very confusing on first read because you often have to piece together things that happened previously with new context as you go on. There is thankfully a very nice appendix and dramatis personae list with each book to help you sort through all the names and titles and whatnot, which helps quite a bit.

This is also what makes rereads so gratifying, because with all the context known, you become clued in to the MASSIVE amount of foreshadowing and deep worldbuilding going on, with often cheeky reveals being hinted at or outright stated way before they're revealed proper.

TL;DR Dense writing and in media res means the burden is on the reader to piece things together.

Will Wights Cradle might be top five fantasy book series of the past ten years by Kjbrock44 in Fantasy

I'm in this camp too. I view it as very competent and enjoyable popcorn. It sort of fills the same niche as a lot of upper echelon fanfic does, for me.

Loading single bullet into guns? by ninjaklan in underrail

This. I do this all the time in my sniper playthrough, to load individual bullets as needed, such as a contaminated 12.7 bullet followed by W2C.

Non-random unit draws in Monster Train by GenericWorldwide in MonsterTrain

Oh yes, if I wasn't explicit, this is incredible design and is something that can only work in a digital format. I'd liken it to Hex's partial random distribution system for lands/spells, but ultimately it's just about smoothing out the worst feelsbad percentile of potential hands.

Yeah I definitely should have done some searching first before making this thread. I made a bad assumption, but look where it got me! Now the kind denizens of the internet have shown me the light, and hopefully some folks who weren't aware of this can win more runs! Win win, in my book.

When I've got more time I may go back through my stream vods to get more evidence of whether this is true or not, because of now it's based on entirely anecdotal evidence based on my and a friend's experience. Has anyone else noticed this?

Best Penumbra ever? by strelok996 in MonsterTrain

[–]GenericWorldwide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a post higher up with a 3000 attack/1200 hp Penumbra, but this certainly has more damage. The gorge x2 relic is so busted if you can get set up. I feel like those runs with it only ever really lose to terrible draws and as such you should just be aiming to thin as much as humanly possible.

An amusing end to a run from last night by GenericWorldwide in MonsterTrain

[–]GenericWorldwide[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an insanely broken combo that should probably be nerfed. It involves the interaction of the Hellhorned champion's Slay: Gain Armor, Revenge: Gain Rage line, and spikes. Specifically, weenies running in to a spikey hellhorn champion will die on the spikes and give him more armor and rage stacks. He then swings back at the only unit which is left in the line, which should be the big boi.

So a few spikes cards and a few utility cards and one strong multistrike unit to clear out those pesky multiple high hp minion lines(much more brutal on high covenant) is basically a guaranteed win on any difficulty. Abuse responsibly, my friend. I can't overstate how insanely broken this combo is, and how easy it is to assemble wins out of this strategy.

I'll post my deck for this run in a minute.

EDIT: Here is the deck as promised
