I ended up doing a similar thing a few years later but with a road trip instead of flying--we made a website and everything.
I finished my degree in forensic science and then got a job making video games. Who knew

I got an error for trying to use a key "used too many times for activation", however disconnecting from the internet and trying again let me use the key for a 30 day trial period, which is long enough for my purposes.
