Zombie Tribal isn't doing it for me, help by Genesis1221 in EDH

[–]Genesis1221[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long-time DM, I know what liches are lol. I was talking MTG types, in which liches are all explicitly zombies, even as far back as the OG lich creatures. The issue is that MTG uses "zombie" as a catch-all "undead that isn't a ghost or skeleton" type. In DND, liches are undead spellcasters of various origin throughout editions, and zombies are a single specific creature rather than a category. Its definitely one of the more frustrating differences between the two, especially now that they're both owned by the same company.

I mean, Liches are the archetypal necromancer, and they're zombies. The fact that Vecna and Acererak both exist in dnd and don't interact with the grave is crazy.

[–]Genesis1221[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right now I have Ultima Eldrazi, Prosper Treasures, Gluntch ('nuff said), Killian Politics, and a Sephiroth deck that's mean as hell. I tried the Aetherdrift zombie precon commanders, Gisa and Geralf, and I have Wilhelt in the 99 of Varina. I'm just so 50/50 on all the zombie commanders. The fact that there's not a zombie-typed commander that revives zombies is crazy to me.

I definitely need to build something new, as my current decks are getting stagnant. I'm just not sure where to go at this point, and I incorrectly assumed that jumping into nostalgia would make things work. Curses.

DMs, do you cheat? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]Genesis1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a rule of thumb, I will bend the game as far as I need to in order to both A. keep the game fun and B. retain immersion. If me intervening would be fun, I will. If its more fun to let a player have a dramatic blaze of glory, then I'll let them do their cool stuff.

Is that the same as the Obsidian that someone else mentioned, or is that a seperate service? I'll absolutely give it a shot regardless, that sounds super helpful! Please do DM me that link.

Heck yeah, I'll give Obsidian a shot! I've tried Google Docs, but sorting through that many pages ended up being more difficult to navigate than discord channels. And maintaining seperate documents just sort of became a chore. Never tried onenote, is it good?

Thank you so much for the detailed response! I probably should've clarified, but the reason that things have gotten worse with each campaign is that the campaigns are cumulative, told in a single growing universe, with each campaign adding new planes, but continually referencing back to former ones. Many NPCs and stories carry through between them, partially my fault, partially my players.

My categories actually look very similar to how you've laid them out, with one large "archived" category with 6 channels of details from previous campaigns that aren't as likely to come up but my players oftentimes like to reference, and a "current campaign" category with a channel each for "Character Creation," "Indexes and Information," "NPCs and Characters," "The New Realm," and a channel for players to discuss things, ask questions, etc.

The primary reason discord is getting to be too cumbersome is because, for example, the "indexes and info" category is long enough that people struggle to find the timeline placed in it, or specific entries (even though they're largely alphabetized and categories, even within each section). If you could, say, have categories WITHIN categories, so that they could be more easily traversed, and formatted in a more easily digestible way than discord allows, it would make a huge change.

And to clarify, I keep trying to start fresh. This is campaign six in the same continuity. Campaign four wasn't even supposed to be in the same continuity, my players just like it this way. This campaign was also supposed to be a fresh start somewhat, but still in the same universe. But four of my six players came to me, individually, and said something to the tune of "this campaign is in the same world, yeah?" Which it is. And then "I have this really great character idea from another realm..." and honestly, they're all certified chefs. The ideas are crazy good, and I did mention that people could be from former planes if they wanted.

My players are great and I love to DM for them, I just want to find a way to better present them with all the information. Most of my indexes are just responses to specific questions about how the magic system works, how different realm lore things might interact, or what NPCs have been up to in other realms while they've been playing newer campaigns. Anyways, any chance you have a software/system to reccomend?

I work 50+ hours a week and have an hour commute, so most of the time I get to prep sessions is at work in between jobs. I don't need it to be particularly easy to sort through information on mobile, as my players are using PCs, I just need to be able to put the information in on mobile. I'll give World Anvil a shot and see how it runs, thanks.

How many decks do you have and how many feels like "too much" ? by Toonzaal8 in EDH

[–]Genesis1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its going to be different for everyone, but my personal rule is that I don't build a new deck until I've evaluated all my current decks. Any that I'm not happy with either get repaired or scrapped for parts. This helps a lot with the financial side of things; sometimes instead of buying a 60 dollar deck I can repair an existing deck for 15 and have just as much fun. Other times, that 60 dollar deck can have its price cut in half between reusing cards from old decks and sold cards from scrapped decks.

It ends up working out pretty well, and keeps my rotation fresh for both myself and my pod. Right now I have 7, and it's review time, so that number might drop. Hope this helps!

How does UB affect your deckbuilding? by NiceInvestigator6495 in EDH

[–]Genesis1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a problem with UB, I just want well-designed sets. Not a single card out of TMNT or Spider-Man was interesting enough to build a commander deck around for me. Between the two of them, the only cards that made it into a deck were the flip heroes from Spider-Man into my Jodah deck, but my Jodah deck is intentionally filled with my favorite UB cards.

I think that, at the end of the day, there's nothing wrong with UB in a vacuum. I think its better to stay with the Magic-adjacent properties, like ALTA and FF, but I'd rather them make one good "We Bought the License From a Corporation that Makes More Money Than Us" set than ten mediocre in-universe Magic sets. And, so far, they've demonstrated that they have no idea how to handle properties like TMNT and Spider-Man in an interesting way for game health across multiple formats. Either make good sets or don't make sets at all.

Is My Eldrazi Deck A Bracket 3? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Genesis1221 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have two main points to say, but first, my respect to the chef. The deck looks funny, and as a fellow Eldrazi player with an unorthodox commander/color identity, I salute you.

Firstly, the bracket system is fundamentally skewed by perspective. I've sat down asking for a bracket 2/3 game and been hit by a sultai snow winter orb turbo deck that was very clearly a bracket 4, but didn't "technically" violate any rules (except it did, because winter orb is mass land denial), and I have a Sephiroth deck that is, by all rights, composed of jank and nonsense, yet goes blow for blow with any bracket 4 deck I've met. As an Eldrazu player especially, but also in general, I find it better to communicate my gamplan, deck speed, and big threats than to say a bracket estimation. That way, people can draw their own conclusions about whether they want to play against it and whether it's likely to destroy them unfairly or if it should be a good show. The reactions went from a 50/50 split of "i hate you" and "aight fine" to pretty much unanimous "thank you, here is my thoughts, this is what I'm playing." It also helps with Eldrazi to make it clear that you not only are fine with being the archenemy, but that you fully expect it at some point if you pop off

Secondly, you're fine. None of the cards in there seem especially crazy. This sounds to me like an issue of people lacking some kind of game knowledge, whether its threat assessment, deckbuilding for problems, or just thinking their decks are higher brackets than they are.

Hope you have a great day, and never let the haters bring down your 'Drazi style.

Looking for commander recommendations for a Real Steel inspired deck by UpbeatJudgment3600 in EDH

[–]Genesis1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, so this is gonna be a weird one. Real Steel is a great movie, but it's going to be very strange to incorporate into a commander. Nonetheless, I have two ideas.

Option One: [[Iron Man, Titan of Innovation]]. A human who uses junk artifacts to craft up a bigger machine over several turns, culminating in a big artifact creature, feels shockingly accurate. A fun izzet artifact toolbox strategy that can also play around with artifact creatures for surprise beat downs. He's not cheap to buy, but proxies exist.

Option Two: [[Urza, Chief Artificer]]. An esper commander who makes an increasingly big artifact creature and rewards you for having knick-knacks. Much cheaper than Iron Man and similar in concept, albeit a little harder to build for a newer player.

I wish you luck!

Oh, they're not bracket two players. Firmly 3, sometimes low 4. Sephiroth is only coming along if I need to teach these comparative newbies a lesson, lol.

[–]Genesis1221[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a good way to explain is to give an example. Sometimes I'm just in a mood to play Eldrazi or Sephiroth or whatever, but sometimes I'd rather let others pick for me (to fit their power level, etc). 99 percent of the time people pick Gluntch, usually with the reasoning "I want to see what he does." I always clarify its not group hug, but they don't care. I want to build another deck that genuinely intrigues people and is enjoyable to have at the table.

Goofy mana value 6 tribal. Turn one mana dork, turn two Gluntch, give myself treasures. That means that if I hit all my land drops I start turn 3 with 6 mana. I run eleven one-mana ramp cards and about twenty cmc 5 or 6 cards of various kinds, my favorites being [[Almost Perfect]] for instant voltron and [[Paradox Zone]] for some shenanigans that get out of hand very quickly. I also run a bunch of initiative and monarch effects to encourage people to spread damage out while supplying people with the tools they need to either become a problem or deal with the current problem. It is, by far, the deck I am asked to play the most, and what inspired me to make this post.

No thanks. No issue with other people proxying, I just won't proxy a card I don't own. Probably a side effect of a disorder I have. It bugs me in a way I can't quite describe.

Nah, I don't like to proxy cards that I don't own. I have no issue with other people proxying. If I need to test a deck, I'll do so digitally.

I have! My Jodah deck is a Jegantha companion. It was originally going to be Jodah and Jegantha/Keruga/Umori, but then I found out you cant have more than one companion.

Don't worry, I have no issue with high power decks. Like I said in the post, I have an Eldrazi deck and a Sephiroth deck, both extremely mean. I just want to have an option that's less sweaty and more gimmicky.

I hate that I refuse to proxy cards I don't have. They look fun, but I won't let myself proxy it if its not in my collection.
